Here's some masto history
There was a period of severe #racism here on masto. And not just from the shitty nazi side.
Just a lot of white liberal "left" people who felt that they were God's Gift to Mankind.
Who knew how to walk the walk. But the moment you pushed even slightly at them. Pointed out how a statement could be read as inflammatory. Pointed out an outdated term.
They exploded. Shit the fucking bed. And then left in a huff.
It took a group of #BIPOC users getting together and agreeing to work together for a while in dealing with these "subtle" racists for anything to get done. Because, of course, these shitlords made themselves popular amongst the white population.
But, it has happened. there was a solid year of stress and daily racism at some pretty extreme levels.
but there has been a sharp decrease of racism. Not an ending, I ain't ignorant. But a step, and a big enough step that I know of several instances on here that I can reach out to whenever I feel racially targeted to help me out.
I worry about how many of those shitheads are going to sneak in with the current iteration of new users.
But it isn't hopeless. We just have to remain vigilant and reach out to our fellow BIPOC for backup.
One of the reasons a lot of us OG fedi folks came over was to get away from constant promo posts on Twitter and FB. At the same time, we want indie creators especially to be able to support themselves, which means we need to promote our stuff.
So some etiquette has evolved around self promotions. I’m gonna share the basics, and then explain how I approach promoting my work for folks who are following me. The rest of this thread is going unlisted and under a CW.
I've been working in documentation & information design for, um, a couple of decades.
In my latest gig, I'm working primarily with engineers for the first time.
Last night, we talked about a metadata challenge where we need to come up with the core metadata types & the available values for each of those types.
I'm used to thrashing this stuff out with stakeholders for WEEKS or MONTHS.
Instead, this morning in my inbox there is a beautifully simple, organised & comprehensive spreadsheet with the metadata info I need, and the use cases for each one.
I LOVE this job. I want to stay with this organisation forever
I am about to wipe my DigitalOcean mastodon droplet for the 7th or 8th time ahaha, and try setting up blorbo.social again.
I've locked myself out of the mastodon superuser on the backend because I accidentally closed the file with the su password without saving it. I don't think it can be recovered.
This means that I'll need to recreate a day or so's worth of stuff on blorbo.social and set up the @admin again, but I'm okay with this I think.
It's all good, all a learning experience.
No matter how many times this comes on the t/l, it gets a RT, because MY GOD, THE WAY HE MOVES!!!!
