The story about the Chinese spy balloon over Montana is very odd - normally these pressurised stratospheric balloons are launched for circumpolar flights in the (normally) stable polar wind vortex. It would make much more sense if this was intended as an arctic observation system that then got carried south. If you wanted to spy on Montana satellites do a better job.

Politicians be like: ‘I believe in this and I believe in that’

They only thing they do is believing but that doesn’t make stuff happen

Stop believing and make stuff happen

This is so frightening and has been flagged as a right wing goal for some time. And now the “history & tradition” obsession has brought us here. Pay attention colleagues. Please. https://twitter.com/mjs_dc/status/1621241348719345666

@simoncarswell Good points. I have myself enjoyed a drink, but I not so much lately. I have found in recent years that I am more sensitive to alcohol's effects, so now my drinking is just wine at holiday dinners.

"Sensitive" means I feel the drink quickly (and don't much like the tipsy feeling even though I liked the drink), and even a single drink is followed the next morning by a mini-hangover.

Thus the idea that the healthiest option is no alcohol is fine with me — now. Earlier? Not sure.

@simoncarswell I shared that report with a friend, who pointed out that the report is from 2017 and subsequent research doesn't support those findings.

He specifically pointed to the report you can download (PDF) at this link:

https://ccsa.ca/canadas-guidance-alcohol-and-health

There is a continuum of risk associated with weekly alcohol use where the risk of harm is:
• 0 drinks per week — Not drinking has benefits, such as better health and better sleep.
• 2 standard drinks or less per week — You are . . .

Canada’s Guidance on Alcohol and Health | Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction

CCSA proudly led the initiative to update Canada’s Low-Risk Alcohol Drinking Guidelines (LRDGs). The project, funded by Health Canada, began in July 2020. The two-and-a-half-year process culminated in the creation of Canada’s Guidance on Alcohol and Health, which replaces the LRDGs. Canada’s Guidance on Alcohol and Health provides people living in Canada with the information they need to make well-informed and responsible decisions about their alcohol consumption.

@simoncarswell Good point. It's hard to know in advance whether a person is susceptible to overdoing alcohol, especially since that depends on both person and subsequent situations, both of which change over time.

This one study seems carefully done, but also some of the "no positive benefit" studies seem to have been done with reasonable care. I imagine how the drinking is done is also important (e.g., with meals and friends/family vs. alone on empty stomach).

Yep. The writing is on the wall.

@simoncarswell

I also rely on studies. As noted ,some studies show no benefit from drinking. But if the study you quote is correct, doctors should start advising non-drinking patients to take up drinking for the sake of their health.

"I see you don't drink. I'm going to ask you to start drinking, at least 3 drinks a week but not more that 14 drinks/week [for men — not more than 7 drinks/week for women]. But definitely start drinking. Otherwise your health is at risk."

I don't see it.

@simoncarswell You're welcome. I'd be interested to read your thoughts after you've had a chance to look into it and mull it over.
