Language, society, politics. A personal view from Jerusalem. Twitter migrant
Noteworthy in this hotel sign in downtown #Jerusalem: signmakers decided to go with the spoken version of the name, Machne rather than the formal "Maḥane" Yehuda; also note use of Rashi script in #Hebrew (which given the letters in this case, should be easily legible)

Hadassah Hospital presents a #bilingual, Hebrew-Arabic poster: "Here in Hadassah we show mutual respect" (not sure about the gesture though, might be a "timeout" - e.g., timeout from intolerance, timeout from clashes, etc.)

The charming cable car leading to Haifa U/Technion is known in #Hebrew as the Rakvalit, a variant of standard "rakevel" perhaps styled after other modes of transport in Haifa (metronit, Carmelit). In #Arabic I've seen "qitar hawa'ai" (literally, air train) and also "teleferik" (following French téléphérique)

"Temporary not available": In this notice, the Hebrew and Arabic came out looking OK, as far as I can tell, but as you can see, the English did not fare as well

A nice #bilingual café sign in Haifa, "Mishwar" in Arabic and English (generally a trip or errand, but apparently has other meanings as well), and "kafih" as café in Arabic (instead of literary "maqhah")

@datatherapist reminds me of the time I asked the eldest at age 3 to clean up her toys, and said encouragingly, "it's for a good cause," only to have her snap "zeh lo cause yafeh"

"Xoref.com": lots of interesting stuff in this poster for a winter festival in Jerusalem, from phonetic "X" for #Hebrew "ḥet" in ḥoref (winter), to the diminutive "multiculti" for multicultural...

@esipova strong Hanukkah vibe right there! (although upon further examination, it seems to be a New Year's display...)
