Democrats have held the 5 major statewide offices in Michigan (Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, and both Senate seats) since the 2018 election.
Democratic state House and Senate candidates got higher percentages of total votes cast than their Republican opponents in most elections since 2000. GOP control of both houses of the state legislature was really a function of gerrymandering.
A 2018 citizens’ initiative, however, successfully depoliticized Michigan’s election maps. Using fair districts, the 2022 election flipped both houses of the legislature to Democrats, far better reflecting the will of the voters.
Democrats are the good government party. They believe in public service and the ability of government to improve people's lives. The focus is on what they can do for people, not to them.
