On Feb 21, the Trident Amateur Radio Club will be running a special event station in remembrance of the HL Hunley. We'll be operating as N4HLH for the event. Hours of operation will be sometime after 9:00 AM and run until 2:00 PM EST. Keep an eye out for us on the #POTA spots page.

Seeing as I currently hold a negative ham radio achievement (I have never called CQ on SSB) I will take a paddle with me and see if they'll let me run some #MorseCode. 😆

I managed to fall into a noob trap yesterday when listening to an excerpt from Dracula. There were audio issues afoot and the sender's sidetone had an annoying chirp to it. Despite that I managed to head copy the words "grievously anxious" at 25 WPM, and found myself celebrating this silly accomplishment. As reward for my gloating I of course missed the next couple of words. 😂 sigh. Bad habits are hard to break.

I haven't been updating much on my #morse code journey lately, and probably won't from here on. I have indeed been self studying with a kind of frenetic zeal, but at some point it ceases to be commentary from a determined newbie and instead becomes, well... bragging. Nobody has time for that. I am happy however, to share my fails, especially when they're amusing.

It's February. It's only five months until ARRL/RAC Field Day!

Last year, I modified Morse Walker to support practicing running CW FD.

I've since done a couple other modifications; sadly I haven't heard back from the author on PRs, so if you are thinking you'd like to brush off your Morse code to participate in Field Day, my fork is still your best option:

I'm saying this now because I got that work done shortly before FD last year and was absolutely not ready to run, but was able to do S&P based on having learned in the fork. But there's enough time left that running POTA and practicing in my fork of Morse Walker might be enough for you to run CW FD. Double points for CW QSOs! ☺

I've thought about what it would take to make it have a mode for simulating S&P / hunting (Morse Pouncer?), but it's a lot more work for much less value, so I can't imagine I'll make that investment this year. Practice running with only one responding caller configured, and keep your sending speed to speed you can copy, and you'll learn the pattern well enough anyway.

Morse Walker

Morse Walker is a CW pileup trainer with modes such as POTA, SST, and CWT, plus beginner-friendly features, including adjustable speeds and Farnsworth spacing.

@chswx seeing snowflakes in Mt Pleasant. Nearest major intersection is IOP conn and rifle range. Wife says it started about 15 mins ago.

I see that the 2026 #SOTA challenge is for activators and hunters to use SSB or #CW on 2m/70cm. Do any options exist to use these modes on those bands that don't cost thousands of dollars or involve the words "then use a soldering iron to remove a resistor..."?

Will be interested in precipitation reports if you’ve got them. We are at a bit of a disadvantage with the Charleston radar being out; Columbia can’t see as close to the ground here, and the beam is probably overshooting any shallower rains.

A new starting page has been created for the HF+ propagation map. Like the VHF page released earlier, it explains the purpose of the site and describes what it does. A new features allows users to set the map perspective by providing a callsign.

I released HamlibPTT, an EXTFSK plugin that utilizes Hamlib rigctl(d).
Now we can use MMSSTV/MMTTY/MMVARI with modern radio control interface!
