Hey U.S. people: thinking about getting your ham license? Free training, testing, and a radio.
"The Make Operating Radio Easier (MORE) Project is an initiative to reduce both gender and age imbalances in Amateur (Ham) Radio, through education and hands-on activities."
Are you a new ham (in the U.S.) who just got their license in the past 6 months?
You may be eligible for a free* handheld transceiver from QRZ:
free*: you may have to pay for shipping and/or tax, see QRZ's website for terms and conditions

Saw this neat HAM skill tree by @sjpiper145 posted on Boing Boing. I'm going to hang one up in the shack. It would be a good resource for new hams wondering what to do once they get their ticket.
Replaced the button cell in my FT-470. I enjoy electronics work, but the original leads were spot welded to the battery - probably because getting solder to stick to a battery is a PITA. I was worried I was going to cook the battery the whole time.
Two and a half hours later, the radio keeps its memory through power cycle. My Elmer bought it in the 90s as his first HT. I wonder if I'll get 20 years out of the battery.
