Here are 3 Mars 1984 rover traverses from a Site Studies report to the Mars Science Working Group in 1977. The rover plans look superficially like proposals for our modern rovers like Curiosity, but there are very significant differences. We have breathtakingly high resolution images compared to what they had, plus other data sets (thermal inertia and composition especially). These plans are based purely on geomorphology. There's no looking for clays or carbonates.
