Zoom-in on Epimetheus

This zoomed-in view of Epimetheus, one of the highest resolution ever taken, shows a surface covered in craters, vivid reminders of the hazards of space. Epimetheus (70 miles or 113 kilometers across) is too small for its gravity to hold onto an atmosphere. It is also too small to be geologically act...

Lake-like but Different

This mosaic of image swaths from Cassini’s Titan Radar Mapper, taken with the synthetic-aperture radar SAR, features a large dark region several hundred kilometers across that differs in several significant ways from potential lakes observed on Titan.

[An #ENA imager headed for #Uranus?] ENAs are energetic neutral atoms produced during #collisions in hot #plasmas. They are omnipresent in space environments.

The interplanetary probes #Cassini and #JUICE carry (or carried) an ENA imager. Various #simulations reveal that such a detector aboard the #Voyager2 probe would have provided a better understanding of Uranus’s magnetospheric environment: https://www.irap.omp.eu/en/2026/05/back-to-the-future-viewing-uranus-through-an-ena-camera/

Les sondes interplanétaires #Cassini, #JUICE, embarqu(ai)ent un imageur ENA. Dot Against the Dark

As if trying to get our attention, Mimas is positioned against the shadow of Saturn's rings, bright on dark. As we near summer in Saturn's northern hemisphere, the rings cast ever larger shadows on the planet. With a reflectivity of about 96 percent, Mimas (246 miles, or 396 kilometers across) appears ...

THE EUROPEAN UNION’s SPACE ENTREPRENEURSHIP INITIATIVECASSINI is the European Commission's initiative to support entrepreneurs, start-ups, and SMEs in the space industry, including New Space, during 2021-2027. The initiative is open to all areas of the EU Space Programme, and covers both upstream (i.e. nanosats, launchers, etc. and downstream (i.e. products/services enabled by space data, etc.). CASSINI includes a €1 billion EU seeds and growth fund, hackathons and mentoring, prizes, a business accelerator, partnering and matchmaking.

Stretched Shadow

The shadow of Saturn moon Dione, cast onto the planet, is elongated in dramatic fashion in this image captured by NASA Cassini spacecraft. The moon itself does not appear here, but the shadow can be seen south of the ringplane.

Fenzal and Aztlan

Although hidden from human eyes, NASA Cassini spacecraft can spot these dark features on the surface of Titan dubbed Fensal and Aztlan. The dark features are believed to be vast dunes of particles that precipitated out of Titan atmosphere.

Ultraviolet Enceladus

Looking beyond Saturn's south pole, this was the Cassini spacecraft's view of the distant, icy moon Enceladus on July 28, 2004. The planet itself shows few obvious features at these ultraviolet wavelengths, due to scattering of light by molecules of the gases high in the atmosphere. Enceladus is 499 kilome...
