I've been having some fun scanning full sections with polarizing sheets. The cross-polarized light scan of this folded serpentinite really brings out the gorgeous structures.

Two crystals of kyanite in a quartz matrix, but the birefringence is not what I expected. What's up with the blue in cross-polarized light? Strongly zoned and/or some kind of anomalous birefringence?
Time for an #introduction!
I’m Hugo, a structural geologist / metamorphic petrologist from the Netherlands. My interests lie in how rocks respond to a change in conditions and stresses: chemical reactions, deformation, dissolution, fluid processes and more.
Currently I’m a postdoc at the Njord Centre, University of Oslo, measuring residual stresses in lower crustal fault zones.
Follow me for the occasional #rock picture, #microscopy, or research update!
My first whatever-messages-are-called-on-here.
This is a pyroxene that's just doing pyroxene things, found inside a garnet pyroxenite from Norway. One of my favourite microscopy photos ever! Enjoy
