Middle-aged but still very silly nerd, who after decades of working in R&D, Manufacturing and Aerospace now builds custom tube guitar amps for discerning musicians, while also building a beach house in SoCal and pottering about on a slow Royal Enfield. Grew up in rural Wales, which was simultaneously fabulous and (in retrospect) depressing. Atheist, unapologetically pro socially progressive policies, allergic to extremism in all forms - differences are fabulous, ‘othering’ is not.
@CyberpunkLibrarian If people only knew HOW many systems they use are elderly mainframes, interfaced to modern systems with IBM 3270 emulators (& other integration layers) they’d be more OK with this- as long as it’s reliable then it’s a good system! Heck, I still have a 1980’s PC which runs basic automation systems well thanks to lead solder and low-density silicon tech & I often service 1950’s electronics which just need a cleanup to work as new. Simple often = reliable.

@kitoconnell Yep, used to live near there. It’s not a great place to raise kids OR be a human being TBH - it’s just good at marketing itself for the sake of tax revenues. If all you want is to eat barbecue ‘food’ and shout at each other about Football then fine, have at it. If you have any other interests, stay away! I left after a swastika was flown nearby and the politics got so right-wing and hateful. Back in CA, where there’s less property tax and nicer peeps than Austin.

Consumer Reports (CR) has released a mobile app (iOS, Android on the way) that shows what data companies collect about you, then allows you to have CR get the data deleted:

Essentially, CR will act as the data ombudsman for anyone who asks them to. I love it.
CR is a non-profit that accepts no advertising or corporate sponsorship, and they have a great reputation. It's a superb choice to take on the data capitalists.

@AbbyFla And quite a few, including me, are thinking about un-migrating, with our skills, cash and kids, given how quickly it’s gone downhill in the last 5 years. Sure, the economy’s in surprisingly good shape compared to much of the World, but sociologically, it’s a train wreck. Everyone’s in competition all the time, there’s zero society to speak of as a result, and work-life balance is a joke. Do not recommend - mainland Europe now beats it in all ways.
