Dear open source community,

We have officially run out of acronyms that use the letter O and have looped back around. The duplication is confusing.

Due to an increase in circumstances that could better be described as open-adjacent, please start using the term "Ajar" instead of "Open" where appropriate. This will also allow us to create new acronyms more creatively with less duplication while maintaining the pronounceable flexibility provided by a vowel.

Escher would have been proud of this...

I truly feel there is a need for a standardized calibration system to produce color images from satellites that are true to human color perception. This is absolute standard behavior for a DSLR or even your phone camera, but too often neglected in scientific imaging.

This is a copy of my thread on Twitter. Lots of discussion is happening over there already: https://twitter.com/stim3on/status/1681776551065530368

Holy _shit_ this paper, and the insight behind it.

You know how every receiver is also a transmitter, _well_: every text predictor is also text compressor, and vice-versa.

You can outperform massive neural networks running millions of parameters, with a few lines of python and a novel application of _gzip_.

WATSON also has UV LEDs that allow the camera to observe fluorescence of the rocks.
This effect is not very pronounced here, but I think there are a few grains that glow slightly in the UV lit image.

the second and third image have different processing, first a more neutral white balance which makes the grains look even more green. Second is a darkened greyscale version which shows some isolated bright spots. These might also be direct reflections of the light.

The interior angle of the pizza slice emoji in the Apple emoji set 🍕is 48.5556º, implying that the pizza was cut into a very awkward 7.4 slices. (Or that somewhere there exists another 48º slice and two corresponding 41.4444º slices)
Mastodon went from 1.2M active users last week to 1.8M active users this week. That's not 70M users overnight, but it's something! 🙂
The best skill a GIS person needs, is not coding, not analytical capabilities, and not even a good understanding of theories, no, the best skill is PATIENCE. Yes, believe it or not, after years of wo..... ah, finally, the join operation on 3.2 million records is done!
