UAW President Tells Trump He Isn’t Welcome on Picket Lines

@elan @rbreich I have 5 years of software experience including experience in CV and ML, CI/CD, and many projects that I spearheaded or completely designed and implemented myself.

I'm entirely self-taught. I have worked every part of the software stack. I have created REST APIs and SQL and Mongo DBs. I have a few personal projects that I've completed and even supported, all free and open source.

Idk, I feel like it shouldn't be this hard for someone passionate and willing.

@rbreich I'm a very good software engineer looking for work to keep the house I never thought I'd be able to buy and send my kids to school. 1.5 months and dozens of apps later I have but 1 interview.

I want to work. I'm not asking a lot. I just want to make things that are useful and have a comfortable life.

Can we please settle this debate already? There is no labor shortage. There is a living wage shortage, a hazard pay shortage, a child care shortage, a paid sick leave shortage, and a health care shortage.

Ok so. In light of much talking about Bing, Bard and "truth", I looked at what the "Stochastic 🦜" paper warned. The first 2 things, "automatically write term papers" and "interact on social media" have already come true. So....now do we just wait for the third to happen?

I can't get over this quote: "We got this invite to talk about machine learning and how it can be misused in our space. It’s something we never really thought about before."

Really? Never? Did they think ML only produces puppies and rainbows?

Hard to think of a bigger self-regulation failure, or a stronger case for government to come in to do the thinking that they are unable/unwilling to do.

AI suggested 40,000 new possible chemical weapons in just six hours

AI could be just as effective in developing biochemical weapons as it is in identifying helpful new drugs, researchers warn.

@Syphilia @BigAngBlack They were compensated the equivalent of $20 MILLION for having to give up what they never should've owned in the first place. Then the slaves had to work 8 more years as unpaid "apprentices." And people want to argue about reparations. Just unreal. #BlackMastadon #BlackFedi #ReparationsNow

This is an absolutely phenomenal read:

Excavating AI
The Politics of Images in Machine Learning Training Sets

> What are the assumptions undergirding visual AI systems? First, the underlying theoretical paradigm of the training sets assumes that concepts—whether “corn”, “gender,” “emotions,” or “losers”—exist in the first place, and that those concepts are fixed, universal, and have some sort of transcendental grounding and internal consistency.

Excavating AI

An investigation into the politics of training sets, and the fundamental problems with classifying humans.

@SwiftOnSecurity There's some embedded cultural commentary on the fact news stories are asking if ChatGPT will replace your job instead of rendering toiling for survival obsolete.
