It's not for fun, or any sense of community.
It's just trying to dull the pain.

Zohran Mamdani's People-Powered Win Is a Rebuke to Democrat Cowardice

He took a long drag on his cigarette, before exhaling and turning to look at her.

“Well, it’s been 15 years. What do you say? Is it time? Should we take the plunge?”

She smiled at him, and took his hand.

“Let’s just leave the signatures in detect only mode for a couple more weeks.”

Indeed.

When authorities in the US, UK and EU announced the "largest ever" law enforcement action against ransomware-deploying botnets they didn't just take seize websites and dismantle criminal infrastructure.

They also posted videos mocking the cybercriminals, and asking them to think again about the way their life was heading...

Operation Endgame shows that to be a cybercop these days you may also need to be a dab hand at making AI videos with Russian subtitles!

That's the only use case I can come up with. Maybe to get around dns based adblockers? Or maybe dhcp over tls, but I don't think that exists.

Can someone explain to me the use case for IP based certificates? Is it just so people who can't even figure out how to set up a basic DNS A record can get a cert for https that won't cause browsers to freak out?

Sorry, maybe I'm missing something.

My post from last year explains the process: https://tedium.co/2024/05/17/google-web-search-make-default/

@pixelpusher220 I originally built this as a way so people who aren’t tech-savvy could use these search engines without going into settings or installing extensions.
