I’m a sociologist, you know how we are. I study punishment with interviews and fieldwork. Worcester, MA. He/him.

The reason Mastodon and the Fediverse is spread out on so many servers is it protects it from being taken over by anyone. Not even the richest can buy this place.

Centralised services like Twitter are incredibly easy to buy out. If you move from Twitter to another centralised service, sooner or later that will get bought out too.

The point of the Fediverse is to break this buyout cycle, to let people be permanently in control of their accounts. More info here:

To Save the Republic, Confront the Carceral State

The way to a stronger democracy starts with reforming our massive criminal justice system.

The New Republic

New national survey shows implicit racial bias regarding Black women and handguns.
62% surveyed said Black women had experience using handguns when only 21% ACTUALLY did.

Just published a paper in LSR on #collateralconsequences, #juries, and the #carceralstate. Interviews with 103 court officials reveal that being perceived as an offender or victim of crime (or proximate to one) is a common basis for jury exclusion. We argue that such exclusion is a collateral consequence of mass criminalization, with racialized and gendered effects that maintain law's inequality.

I've created a small, incomplete, list of instances with moderators of color.

The list and suggestions became to much to keep up on my own, so here is a Google document, https://docs.google.com/document/d/12pTmSMpq8lMYyYlHT25DgTmdMmE6ysUyRHGiq-E4XdQ/edit?usp=sharingp

Here's how to move accounts and take your followers with you https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/

New Copy of Fediverse instances with moderators of color

This initially started out as a post but I am offline more than online, so cannot keep up this list. This is why anybody can edit the document. The original is hidden, but I'd encourage you all to make a wiki based on the below instances and information. Hosting your own wiki. For a fully mana...

Google Docs
"With their combined 48,000 members, the four UAW locals of UC teaching and research assistants and postdocs now represent more members than those employed by Fiat Chrysler, and their numbers rank them behind only the union’s GM and Ford divisions. Size-wise, they’re number three in the UAW’s new Big Three" https://prospect.org/labor/how-did-those-uc-grad-students-become-auto-workers/
How Did Those UC Grad Students Become Auto Workers?

The UAW’s campus organizing record is far better than its auto factory record—and it can back up its UC members with a sizable strike fund.

The American Prospect
Disturbed by reports of Black Mastodon users—Black women in particular—having negative experiences on this app, including being randomly banned for discussions of racism. Some of these users will not come back. All will share their experiences. The answer is not to condescendingly lecture them on “how the fediverse works,” as if their experiences are inevitable, nor to swear to do better next time. (There may not be one.) It’s to do better now lest the reputation of this app be cemented.

And some #NewSociologists on Mastodon. Actually, quite a lot. 🙂

Sociologists on Mastodon

A list of sociologists in the Fediverse

@adamdavidson Maybe one thing that will help boost a migration of journalists and others here is to have a "share to mastodon" button at the end of news articles such as this nieman lab article interview with you etc. do you think this is something we can advocate with news outlets? https://www.niemanlab.org/2022/11/can-mastodon-be-a-reasonable-twitter-substitute-for-journalists/
Can Mastodon be a reasonable Twitter substitute for journalists?

Adam Davidson: "I think we got lazy as a field, and we let Mark Zuckerberg, Jack Dorsey, and, god help us, Elon Musk and their staff decide all these major journalistic questions."
