Kiwi with many shits to give about many things. My place is full of animals and plants, computers and geeks, other peoples' kids, cooking and half-done projects, and wishes for a brighter future if we don't spoil the earth first.
Shiny (ooohh look, a... what was I saying?)
Chronically not-healthy but always working on it (and doing kind of OK, actually!).

When I joined Mastodon in April 22 I signed up on an NZ server, then found myself here without realising it, and just kept using this account.
Now taking the step of moving accounts because when I click local I'd actually like to see local. So wish me luck... if all goes well I'll see you on the NZ and no one will notice a thing!

The Bee Guy shares some home truths about saving the bees

"If you really want to help native wild bees:

Don’t keep hives, keep flowers. Wildflowers. This will mean you will ultimately keep native wild bees.

... Don’t spray poisons on your patch and forget neat and tidy – it’s so last century."

Would any clever people here happen to know what this is made of? Or who made it? Or what it's for?
It's quite heavy, has (fake, I assume) diamond bits and silver painted bits. A strong hinge and a magnet. Seems very well made and kind of flashy, yet there's no labelling of any kind.
No image description added because other than 'decorative bird thing' I'm not sure what to say - help me fill in the details!

"New Zealand’s marginal tax rate system... works like this: The first $14,000 is taxed at a rate of 10%. Money you earn between $14,000 and $48,000 a year is taxed at a rate of 17.5%. Between $48,000 and $70,000 you pay 30%. Between $70,000 and $180,000 you are taxed 33% and every dollar you earn over $180,000 in a year is taxed at 39%. (If you earn $72,000 a year, you don’t pay 33% on the whole lot – just the bit over $70,000.)"

'Taxation by stealth': Inflation means tax brackets need 'urgent attention'

The high inflation environment means many people are earning more, which means bigger tax bills.

So yours was
the only masked face
at the office
and in the store
on the subway
and in the waiting room
at least now you know the answer
to your teacher’s question
of if you would be willing
to do the right thing
even if you
were the only one doing it.
When the world gets less sexist but sometimes you still have to force it a little:

Lately I've seen nonsense like "trans women are not women" or "trans women cannot be mothers" in my feed.

I'd like to provide an engineer's answer:

"People Who Say It Cannot Be Done Should Not Interrupt Those Who Are Doing It."

It is very clear and visible that there are trans women who are doing motherhood, doing sisterhood, doing cool-aunt-hood, and so on.

I sincerely hope that this puts the matter to rest.

Dear North Americans,

Please stop using seasons when referring to release dates etc.

Kind regards,

As a computer hobbyist, I often worry how good my passwords are. I've never seen anything to describe how important it is. This chart and the research is super. My hat off to HIVE!
