Hello!

Just a note that I am primarily using bluesky now, and have been for a while (which will be obvious to anyone trying to follow or contact me here). You can find me there at @drshort.bsky.social

I will likely delete this account in the coming weeks as I find it difficult to keep up with any social media.

Courage!

If you spent your days studying the link between fossil fuel-induced #ClimateChange and extreme weather events like Dr. Fredi Otto, you too would be this mad about the lack of #FossilFuel phase-out language from COP28.

Failure of Cop28 on fossil fuel phase-out is ‘devastating’, say scientists

Climate experts say lack of unambiguous statement is ‘tragedy for the planet and our future’

If direct air removal costs $500 per tonne, removing just US emissions would cost ~$3 trillion annually (that's ~4x US military spending).

It would also require twice the total power generation capacity of the US today (and it has to be carbon-free).

Direct air capture: An expensive, dangerous distraction from real climate solutions

Separating carbon dioxide from air, while technically straightforward, is outrageously expensive.

All #PlanetaryBoundaries mapped out, six of nine crossed: For the first time, an international team of scientists is able to provide a full picture of planetary resilience by mapping out all nine boundary processes that define a safe operating space for humanity.

“This update clearly depicts a patient that is unwell, as pressure on the planet increases and vital boundaries are being transgressed”, says co-author Johan Rockström: https://www.pik-potsdam.de/en/news/latest-news/a-full-picture-of-planetary-resilience-all-boundaries-mapped-out-six-of-nine-crossed

A full picture of planetary resilience: All boundaries mapped out, six of nine crossed

09/13/2023 - For the first time, an international team of scientists is able to provide a detailed outline of planetary resilience by mapping out all nine boundary processes that define a safe operating space for humanity. From global warming to the biosphere and deforestation, from pollutants & plastic to nitrogen cycles and freshwater: Six of nine planetary boundaries are being transgressed, while pressure in all those boundary processes is increasing, cutting-edge research published in the journal Science Advances shows.

I feel like the older I get and the deeper into global overshoot of ecological limits we get the more I feel like uttering apparent paradoxes all the time. Such as

Everybody slow the heck down, it's an emergency!!

If you keeping looking for support where the money is, you'll only be able to support ideas that make sense to those with the money.

A phone message from prison.

Morgan Trowland is a 40-year old civil engineer recently imprisoned for three years after suspending himself and a #JustStopOil banner over the Dartford Crossing of the M25 motorway, prompting the police to close the road for 40 hours.

He explains his thoughts after the unexpectedly draconian sentence:

Throwback Thursday - Private Jet Actions

People in the Global North must be prepared to challenge the economic and political system that allows a few super rich individuals to have the same emissions footprint of 1,000s of people in the poorest countries.

Many of us who work on carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) are ambivalent about CDR for this reason: Just because something is necessary doesn’t make it a possibility.

We should hedge against CDR not working and decarbonize ASAP. Also, CDR is useless unless we decarbonize significantly.
