Non-Violent Civil Disobedience for Climate Justice: Why Scientists Are Choosing to Rebel

Scientists have warned for decades about accelerating climate breakdown, biodiversity loss, and the widening injustices that accompany ecological collapse. Yet despite overwhelming evidence, political responses continue to fall short, and powerful interests obstruct meaningful change. In this context, some researchers are questioning the limits of conventional scientific communication and asking what responsibilities scientists have during a planetary emergency.
In this session, members of Scientist Rebellion will discuss why they have chosen to engage in non-violent civil disobedience as a deliberate form of climate communication. They will share experiences from their 2022 action in Munich—including the high-profile protest involving adhesive action at a BMW exhibit—and explain why they decided to move beyond publishing scientific papers, writing opinion pieces, and participating in traditional outreach. They will also speak about the ongoing legal proceedings brought against them by the Bavarian state, and the ethical, political, and professional implications of taking such action.
The presentation will be followed by an open discussion on the role of scientists in a time of systemic crisis:
When is it justified to go beyond “science-as-usual”?
