The fifth annual Researching Academic Integrity Student Conference took place on 16 March 2026, supported by Turnitin. Well done to everyone involved, and thanks for sharing many of the latest insights into #GenAI developments and how these are changing what we think about #academicintegrity.

You can watch the recording here (individual presentation start times are time stamped in the YouTube description)

On Monday (16 March 2026) at 16:00 to 18:40 (UK time), I'm hosting our annual Researching Academic Integrity Student Conference on Zoom, which is kindly supported by @Turnitin.

See below for the provisional programme, which covers many #academicintegrity areas, policy developments, and a healthy dose of #GenAI, all along with student views and insights.

This weekend is the #ICAI2026, a major academic integrity conference. I’m talking about AI agents in research, but they’ve been in the news this past week as universities have discovered how students can use them to cheat inside services like Canvas. This functionality isn’t new though and has been around for at least two years for those in the new. The continual dilemma of how to balance the need to teach legitimate use, and how to ensure students learn, remains.

Apparently my guru branding on X just wasn’t strong enough… so I asked Nano Banana Pro to create a truly obnoxious profile. It took some added human insight, but this is the result.

It’s a parody, and I’m sending myself up here, but there’s a clear message: GenAI now makes it trivial to makeover profiles for good or to mislead.

Not rebranding (yet), but maybe #DrLancaster is still to come.

Social media bots and noise are distorting GenAI output. Here’s my case study of a reported tech launch that didn’t happen, how I think GenAI went wrong, and why this matters #techethics https://typefully.com/DrLancaster_1/when-grok-gaslights-itself-bots-bias-and-5MyZQO0
When Grok Gaslights Itself: Bots, Bias, and Fake News Loops | Thomas Lancaster

Grok hallucinates about Grok! This is interesting to me. I have a daily Grok task running to research new trends in technology and marketing from the past 24 hours. The results are often good, but today Grok has gone off the rails when talking about the launch of Grok 3.5 on 12 September 2025 (spoiler - there was no such launch). A #techethics thread about bots and #GenAI manipulation.

There are calls for a boycott of Seattle Worldcon 2025 due to the apparent use of #ChatGPT to vet and select panellists. Here's how this situation unfolded and more about the ethical concerns.

The Seattle Worldcon Controversy: AI, Bias, and the Trouble with Tech in Public Life | Thomas Lancaster

Would you ever think that a long running science fiction convention would be at the centre of controversy surrounding #GenAI and ethics? Seattle Worldcon 2025 is facing a boycott from sci-fi authors, gamers, artists, and other fans, with #ChatGPT at the centre of discussion. If you’re not familiar with Worldcon, you might have heard of this as the conference where the Hugo awards for science fiction and fantasy writing are presented. It’s a big time event.

In the future, footnotes in academic papers may include discount codes! #academicintegrity #ChatGPT

A new Varsity article on a survey of Cambridge students finds an increased academic use of #ChatGPT and vastly different processes across different subjects. No wonder students get confused.

Is ChatGPT Cambridge’s Biggest Academic Secret? | Thomas Lancaster

A new survey reveals that 61.3% of Cambridge students have used #ChatGPT to assist with academic work. 29.7% of students have used ChatGPT to assist with assessed work. This is likely a distinction that means little at many universities, where almost all academic work is assessed.

Is AI manipulation of Reddit user views an acceptable area for research study? This was done without community approval or the informed consent of participants https://typefully.com/DrLancaster_1/university-research-ethical-approval-process-v5KCCDx
University Research Ethical Approval Process Questioned after AI Study on r/ChangeMyView Operates Without Informed Community Consent | Thomas Lancaster

What looks to be a serious breach of research integrity protocol has taken place on a platform used by millions, with AI posing as victims of assault and other traumatic situations, all apparently ethically approved by one of the world’s top universities #researchintegrity #AIethics

“Please do not spit at the train”. Announcement at King’s Cross underground station. Sometimes the mind boggles that they need to say this.
