Interesting idea: researchers submit their protocol & rationale to journal for peer review before collecting data. Editors accept/reject based on importance of question and rigour of the plan, and commit to publish the results if the work is performed as described. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-03178-8?WT.ec_id=NATURE-202410&sap-outbound-id=070C6017B83907CD2B345AC637CF9E5022E7C2DE&utm_source=standard&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=000_SKN6563_0000037183_41586-Nature-20241017-EAlert&utm_content=EN_69705_20241017&mkt-key=42010A0550671EEA9BA03924AF8F504C
‘Doing good science is hard’: retraction of high-profile reproducibility study prompts soul-searching

A paper by some of the biggest names in scientific integrity is retracted for issues including misstatements about the research plan.

I'm recruiting a graduate student this year! Research in our lab integrates field work, genomics, statistical methods, and mathematical modeling to test evolutionary theory and to predict species responses to climate change. Assistant/Associate Teaching Professor, Marine and Environmental Sciences

About the Opportunity The Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts invites applications from qualified candidates for a full-time, non-tenure track teaching faculty position. The faculty member will teach courses that serve both our BS and MS degrees in Environmental and Sustainability Sciences as well as students from other programs (e.g., Public Policy and Urban Affairs, Civil and Environmental Engineering) interested in Marine and Environmental Sciences. Biostatistics and related recitations and labs will be a primary course assignment. Potential additional courses include Introduction to Data, as well as experiential courses as determined by the Chair of the Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences. We seek broadly trained candidates with expertise in biostatistics, teaching in R, experimental design and implementation. Successful candidates could have a background in natural resource management, environmental geoscience, sustainability sciences, conservation biology, environmental/land use planning, environmental water quality/restoration, or related fields. Candidates must demonstrate a background in teaching statistics. Candidates who can leverage their prior experience with government, industry or non-profit organizations to enhance experiential learning opportunities for students are strongly encouraged to apply. Given the diversity of our curriculum, we seek candidates that can offer both day and evening courses, as well as online. Responsibilities: The Assistant/Associate Teaching Professor will be the instructor of record for 6 courses that are either part of the current curriculum or are new courses developed by the candidate to serve the needs of our rapidly evolving and growing academic programs. The Department Chair, Associate Chair, Graduate Program Director and/or Faculty Heads of these programs will work with the candidate to identify new course needs. Service contributions as part of the workload distribution for this position may be assigned after discussion with the Chair of the Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences and may include but are not limited to academic advising, program development, curriculum development, and committee appointments. Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in the environmental/sustainability sciences or another closely related discipline by the appointment start date, minimum 1 year experience teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics using R, as well as excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills. Northeastern is committed to building a diverse faculty who are committed to teaching and working in a multicultural environment. Candidates must have experience in, or a demonstrated commitment to, working with diverse student populations and/or in a culturally diverse work and educational environment. Review of applications will begin November 1, 2023 with an anticipated start date September 2024 or earlier if possible. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled. Documents to submit: CV/Resume, Cover Letter, Teaching Statement, Diversity Equity, and Inclusion Statement: Please provide a statement describing a time when you altered or changed your approach to research, teaching, or service because of the diversity of the group you were working with or your awareness of marginalized populations. What changes did you make, and what did you learn from this situation? We are interested in how you respond to such situations, not the identities of the people involved, so please only disclose what you are comfortable with. Your statement should demonstrate an understanding of the barriers facing individuals from groups marginalized in your field and be in alignment with Northeastern’s mission to reflect the diversity of the societies in which it maintains campuses and to meet the educational needs and interests of its diverse population. Some faculty candidates may not have substantial past experience. If that is the case, we recommend focusing in your statement on the types of activities you think could be useful.
