Can I use gasoline to cook spaghetti faster?
I have an overwhelming urge to share this. Try to quantify #nmr spectra with an R packaged called BATMAN, which performs a Bayesian automated quantification. It's excellent. It's really written in C++. 10 years ago. And the binary packages work. The _source_ packages however, segfault immediately unless I add specifically ` -O0 -ggdb -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2` to my `~/.R/Makevars`. Literally *everything* else segfaults with off-by-one-byte access errors in vectors and arrays. Great...

McGill: Microsoft says server farms are destroying the planet, so we're limiting the institutional cloud disk space we're giving you to 20 GB only

CIHR: You're still required to keep all your original data sets for all your research until 5 years after the end of the grant though

Me: If you and Microsoft want to actually do something about the planet, maybe pull the plug on OpenAI instead

McGill: If you have questions about the new policy read the email again good luck bye!

I find it reassuring that when the UK gov did it's consultation on bringing back barbarian stupid units. Over 98% of respondents said they wanted to just stick with metric.
"Do the OEMs know what is being collected ?"

"This shocked me", about nudity in Baldur's Gate 3: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/826B2sKtcOY

Nudity doesn't shock me at all, it's part of being human. What I DO find shocking is all those games that find it acceptable to let you kill people at will, often with lots of blood & gore, but refuse to show even a nipple. THAT to me is much more disturbing than any nudity would be.

This will shock you in Baldur's Gate 3

The woeful UK government has just released this formal response to a consultation on "bringing back imperial measurements": https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/choice-on-units-of-measurement-markings-and-sales/outcome/choice-on-units-of-measurement-consultation-response. 99% of respondents thought it was a bad idea. Naturally, on the same day we get this excellent use of parliament time: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/pints-of-wine-stocked-on-britains-shelves-for-the-first-time-ever

(Note the quotes around 'pint' because, I understand, the relevant legislation hasn't been adjusted yet).

I cannot begin to attempt to convey how stupid I think this all is. People are starving!

I can't be the only one who has thought "what does the 'k' in KDE stand for?"

I swear, if it's recursive…

It's my daughter's second birthday! I setup Sugar Labs on an old laptop MacBook Air. The laptop had a broken keyboard so I bought her a cheap fun keyboard and mouse combo.

Sugar Labs is neat, it's got a simple UI which will help her learn how to navigate and a few simple programs for her to play with. It has a simple Python IDE but it might be a little while until she's ready to play with that. It has a web browser too so I might setup some custom Home Assistant dashboards so she can change the lights, control her train, etc. And I'll see if I can setup Signal or alike so she can call her grandparents.

I remember playing on our family Amstrad CPC when I was 4yo. It came with BASIC and it was my first exposure to coding. I want my daughter to have the opportunity to be a creator of tech instead of just a consumer of tech.
