Plutocracy in America How Increasing Inequality Destroys the Middle Class and Exploits the Poor

The growing gap between the most affluent Americans and the rest of society is changing the country into one defined—more than almost any other developed nation—by exceptional inequality of income, wealth, and opportunity.

Because also, as reported on by @amywestervelt and Matthew Green in The Nation and The Intercept, the vast majority of people can't tell the difference between native ads and reported stories.

Also, the #NYTimes took over $20bn from fossil fuel companies in just 3 years.

#NYT created the paid editorial, or advertorial, for Mobil in the 1970s, allowing it to set us back on addressing climate change by providing an amazing platform for oil & gas propaganda.

Dear the Press: The REASON Trump launches these tirades, is bc he knows you're all INCAPABLE of reporting on the evidence that came before it. Simply absolute incapable of reporting on anything but his tirade, allowing him to drown out facts.

The IRS announced on Friday it is launching an effort to aggressively pursue 1,600 millionaires and 75 large business partnerships that owe hundreds of millions of dollars in past due taxes.

Rather than starve working Americans to give tax breaks to the top 1%, Biden is lifting up working class and middle class Americans while making sure that the 1% pays their share.

Poor editing: You have to read a long, long way down in this otherwise interesting article about Goodreads to learn that it is owned by Amazon.

That fact should have been right at the top, given Amazon's overwhelming clout in the book-sales business.

‘It’s totally unhinged’: is the book world turning against Goodreads?

The influential user review site has suffered a year of controversies, from cancelled book deals to review-bombing, and exposed a dark side to the industry

Retail theft went down and the national retailers federation had to admit 5% not 50% of theft was from criminal gangs. This whole panic was concocted to close underperforming and unionized stores and the media bought it. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/08/business/organized-shoplifting-retail-crime-theft-retraction.html?unlocked_article_code=1.Ek0.cMux.iabRLNkE-vqu&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
Retail Group Retracts Startling Claim About ‘Organized’ Shoplifting

The National Retail Federation had said that nearly half of the industry’s $94.5 billion in missing merchandise in 2021 was the result of organized theft. It was likely closer to 5 percent, experts say.

The New York Times

(Revised)

The New York Times is collaborating with local newsrooms on investigative projects. This piece, produced with Mississippi Today, is a brilliant and terrifying look into a Mississippi sheriff's department "goon squad" that operated with violent impunity for years. https://mississippitoday.org/2023/11/30/rankin-county-sheriff-goon-squad-got-away-with-years-of-brutality/?mc_cid=84eb08d38f

Note: The Times' initiative is being run by Dean Baquet, who IMO failed in key ways as the org's executive editor but is doing great stuff with this project. (Sadly, the new NYT editor is no better.)

For nearly two decades, a band of Rankin County sheriff’s deputies roamed impoverished neighborhoods, meting out their version of justice.
