German newsmagazine Der Spiegel reported that the Max Planck Society
—one of the world’s top scientific research institutions
—is experiencing an uptick in applications from American scientists.

Its president said the society regards the U.S. as
“a new talent pool” at a time when the Trump administration seeks to cut billions in funding to the National Institutes of Health.

There’s a deep historical irony in these recent developments:
During the Third Reich, it was the Max Planck Society
—then known as the Kaiser Wilhelm Society
—that lost its best and brightest to the U.S. and other countries, including Albert Einstein.

Americans Are Heading for the Exits

Go ahead and roll your eyes at those who want to emigrate amid Trump’s second term, but it’s a worrying trend.

Thinking of Aaron Swartz today & I’m stuck on this photo - he & OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (both circled) each scraped 1000s of docs but one did it to make the knowledge free for all while the other did it to make $$$$ through probabilistic plagiarism. The US DOJ only came after one of them & the other is feted by tech bros and executives.

Thank you Aaron for so much, for RSS, for Markdown, for Creative Commons and more. I’m sorry our society failed you.

me: i’ve single-handedly written software used by tens of millions of people, you can see it right over at github.com/april

prospective employers: sorry, but unfortunately you did poorly in a high-stress 40-minute coding exercise, writing code with no time to think about how to solve a problem you’ve never seen before, in a terrible dev environment, while someone stares at you the whole time

Thinking more about website fingerprinting, where they detect your workstation.

For example, airlines use this to slowly jack up their price, in an effort to make you panic and purchase now.

The drug #clonazepam, used to treat anxiety, seizures and muscle spasms, is being #recalled over a potentially fatal mislabeling mistake.
Endo Inc., based in Pennsylvania, has announced a voluntary recall of 16 lots of Clonazepam Orally Disintegrating Tablets
after it discovered that a number of cartons may have been printed with the incorrect strength and National Drug Code (NDC) on them.
Children and adults prescribed these drugs could mistakenly be taking the wrong dose as a result, putting them at risk of unpleasant and dangerous side effects.

Arizona's farmers have discovered agrivoltaics. This is a no brainer in such hot, dry areas.

"Some plants actually produced more with less water. Cowpea beans, for example – also known as black-eyed peas – had a higher crop yield when grown in the shade of solar panels. Full sun required twice as much water, it turned out"

Farmers turn to Solar Panels to shade Crops, Save Water and generate Power

By Amaia J. Gavica/Cronkite News ( Cronkite News ) - WASHINGTON – For 31 straight days last summer, temperatures in Phoenix hit or topped 110 degrees, the longest such streak ever. That searing Arizona heat dehydrates crops and evaporates water the state needs to conserve. Creating shade is one way to combat the problem. By using solar panels, farmers can simultaneously protect their plants, save water and lower their energy bills – and some are doing just that with help from federal programs designed to encourage this sustainable method of growing. Photovoltaic panels are placed above the crops, harnessing the
