#Agrivoltaics: high returns on investment.

"From an operations and maintenance (O&M) perspective, the study highlights that sheep are a technically superior tool for vegetation control compared to mechanical mowing.

The solar arrays, in turn, provide a beneficial microclimate for the flock as the shade from the panels reduces heat stress and water consumption, which researchers noted can lead to improved animal welfare and weight gain."

Solar sheep grazing delivers margins up to 40% in new study

Researchers at Western University say agrivoltaic sheep grazing models in Ontario outperform traditional farming, with higher margins and dual revenue streams from livestock and solar site services.

@tymwol @nickofnz it doesn't have to take land - solar farms can co-exist with other land use, and apparently can actually help - check out #AgriVoltaics

It is true that too much of it comes from China.
We have very few producers in the UK. I bought a custom sized panel from them once, but couldn't get hold of them recently :(

I also bought some from Austria.

I agree there should be more local choices.

The charge controllers and inverters I like come from America: https://www.morningstarcorp.com/

All the Chinese ones have been poor quality so far.

Argivoltaics place elevated solar panels on farmland, simultaneously producing energy, crops, and livestock. Farmers and advocates for energy equity are beginning to ask regulators in Washington state to relax controls. #agrivoltaics https://ow.ly/1TCh50YuXgR

Will farmers be able to ‘farm the sun’ on agricultural land in Yakima?

Bigger solar farms could make their way into Yakima County. Commissioners are considering updates that would allow solar panels on specific agricultural land.

The battle over solar on farms

Agrivoltaics is either a green revolution or a poison pill for good land. Depends which farmers you ask.

Mother Jones

It's not just sheep that like solar over farmland - solar panels provide farmworkers shelter from the sun and reduces fatigue:

'A recent study in Colorado USA found that farmworkers can also benefit. It spoke to workers and took various physical heat stress metrics, finding that the panels can help farms avoid conditions conducive to dangerous heat stress.'

The impact of agrivoltaics on soil properties
New research shows how agrivoltaic systems can reshape soil by altering moisture, temperature, and microbial activity, creating heterogeneous zones under and between panels. Proper design and management can boost soil health and crop resilience, especially in degraded or arid regions

Agrivoltaics as a systems innovation: Multi-dimensional benefits from global studies across climate, agriculture, energy, and ecosystems.

"From this review, it is projected that implementing agrivoltaics across selected crops and countries could potentially result in an additional agricultural yield of over 1800 million tonnes globally. The maximum theoretical nutritional value of this produce is sufficient to meet the dietary requirements of more than 2.1 billion people annually. This presents a significant opportunity to the world in its fight against hunger"
