My son’s fiancé had to go to the ER yesterday for $urgentmedicalissue. She went to a large but somewhat rural hospital by our house. She learned that the entire normal ER at the hospital (which is quite large - my parents have been there a few times) is now entirely dedicated to acute respiratory illnesses Covid, RSV, etc. “regular” ER patients are treated in a series of hallways that have been converted for the purpose.
With all the new mastodon instances, I'm wondering how many admins are prepared for law enforcement (or other) agencies to come asking for people's information. In many cases the law enforcement is not entitled to this information, nor needs it, but how many admins know what to do and how to be sure they only respond to legitimate requests? And even what their own rights are in these situations? (Which will vary according to local laws.)

Huge win for privacy: Facebook tracking is illegal in Europe!

EU privacy regulators say Facebook and Instagram must not force users to agree to tracking by putting this requirement into their terms. In the future, Facebook must add a clear Yes & No option through which you can accept being tracked - or deny it! #Fight4Privacy 💪

Kyrsten Sinema single-handedly stopped Democrats from ending a tax break for hedge-fund managers and private equity executives.

Meanwhile, she received ~$1 million in donations from Wall Street.

Don’t be fooled: Sinema isn't “independent.” She's beholden to her donors.

Last year, #SantaCon was a superspreader that contributed to the disastrous Omicron surge that killed hundreds of thousands of people.

Did we learn our lesson? Nope. SantaCon is back this weekend, just as COVID cases are surging again in NYC and the city issues a mask advisory.

Chief Judge Howell is right. It’s time for DOJ to STOP playing this endless game of pat-a-cake w/Trump. Indict him, as you would any other person in America, for these obvious, easily probable classified docs crimes. Somewhat scorched-earth #JusticeMatter video dropping soon. https://twitter.com/hugolowell/status/1601342967494881280

Unpopular opinion: we should normalize black people coming to Mastodon, being safe and speaking their minds.

They might talk about internal discomfort and biases we might hold.

It's not their responsibility to educate us. It's our responsibility to create a place where black people are accepted.

I was looking at the news this morning and I think it's the perfect time to bring this up.

“Look you're running a ponzi scheme which also serves as a way for criminals to launder money. And that money disappears. And people start dying. That is the opposite of "weird." That is: "the only way this would end." https://t.co/JcSsNYt9T9”

Today on Risky Biz:

I've just published the weekly show with @metlstorm into the main feed. We talk about the UK and US ban on Chinese security cameras, the ransomware attacks crippling Guadaloupe and Vanuatu and why ransomware is now a regional security concern. We also talk about tech deglobalisation and what we can learn from the collapse of Soviet airliner manufacturing at the end of the Cold War.

Also, REvil is back with more dumps despite the (presumed) ASD action against it:

We've also pushed today's news bulletin podcast from @campuscodi, as read by Claire Aird. There is a lot in there we didn't have time for in the weekly show. (Find this one in the "Risky Business News" RSS feed or on web at link below.)

If you'd prefer to read the news, you can get @campuscodi's newsletter version of that podcast edition here:
