Find out why Project Gutenberg Open Audiobook Collection is one of TIME's 200 best inventions of 2023.

Project Gutenberg is the oldest digital library, started in 1971 to make e-books more accessible. But CEO Greg Newby says it “isn’t great at either creating or distributing.” So Microsoft and MIT teamed up to make the Open Audiobook Collection, using text-to-speech tech to turn 5,000 books into free, synthetically narrated audiobooks, now available on Spotify.

Don’t mind us re-introducing ourselves....

We’re The Markup, a nonprofit newsroom that’s skeptical about Big Tech. And there’s a lot to be skeptical about right now.

Many newcomers due to what's happening in The Bad Place, so here's another #introduction. Hi! I'm an astronomer and science communicator at the European Southern Observatory.

Below is a pic from my previous "office" at ESO's Paranal Observatory in #Chile. I now work full time as Media Officer at ESO's HQ in #Germany.

I mostly post about #astronomy #space #photography and #astrophotography

Stop KOSA

KOSA is a censorship bill that won’t make kids safe. Instead, it'll put all internet users at risk, especially youth. If you believe in a free and open internet, tell your lawmakers to reject #KOSA!

I've been trying for, uh, 4 months to come up with an intro post here and just coming up blank. And then I got to thinking about why that is.

Partly, I am just not a talking-about-myself-ish person. But partly I think I just struggle with the "everyone shout into the stream" style of social networking we have all been saddled with since 2006. I am inherently a creature of niche message boards and whatever LJ was, and my habitat has been eroded.

But anyway. Yeah. Hi. I'm here. I'm a long-time software engineer and short-time lawyer, mostly working in the messy junctions between technology, IP, cybersecurity, and privacy.
