How effective has science been in stemming global heating? The evidence is: Scientists are having exactly zero meaningful effect.

Now some say its time for scientists themselves to take direct action.

Point of View: The biospheric emergency calls for scientists to change tactics

The ever-worsening climate and ecological crises calls for life scientists to engage in advocacy and activism to galvanise governments and the public into action.

I regularly see posts on mask wearing in planes. I'm happy that you're paying attention to health and wearing a mask. But I'm a bit suprised to see so many posts which are framed like taking the plane is an ordinary, frequent, occurrence. Covid is real, but so is climate change.

New preprint by @GilYardeni "The explosive radiation of the Neotropical Tillandsia subg. Tillandsia (Bromeliaceae) has been facilitated by pervasive hybridization." 👏

We used whole-genome reseq data of 34 Tillandsia sp and observe high rates of hybridization within and among clades, which could have facilitated this radiation.

In addition to all the phylogenomic work (figs in the main text), don't hesitate to have a look at the SI (e.g. introgression footprint on chr18)

The new Twitter is changing rapidly — study it before it’s too late

Social-media researchers overemphasized the platform now called X for years. But now, as it rapidly changes into something new and frightening, we risk paying too little attention.

Yesterday it was one year that I joined Mastodon, thanks in great part to the excellent initiative of @alxsim in creating #ecoevosocial in a timely manner.
My activity on Twitter had been slowing down, and I've been really happy of the new place and pace I've found here. At the same time I regret what we lost with science Twitter, and I'm afraid we'll never get back anywhere.

I'm sad to see how much science discource is still on Twitter, and how it is still the main source for science news stories. Yet I'm hopeful we can build something durable here, because the openness allows experimentation and innovation, in addition to being the right thing to do.
