as a bonus, here's the original drawing i made with the measurements. it's made in paint.
they are done - just have to wait for the acetone to evaporate so the thing bonds properly, I had to print this in two parts because there’s no way my printer would handle this overhang

woot! it posts!

in the end it was a broken solder joint on the AT power connector, and bad cache chips

i think i broke task manager
my version of ncat is magic, apparently

which one of you are doing a funny

it seems @UpCloud lets you change the network adapter to emulate an RTL8139, so obviously that means I had to set up a web server running on DOS. Please enjoy.

This is still up and running, by the way. I was assuming it would've crashed at some point, but no...
Good morning everyone! Still up and running. Surprising amounts of bot traffic.

@ChlorideCull using my @UpCloud to host a nt3.51 VM, like god intended

(edit for clarification: this is a concept post)

@domi you can try, but the issue is usually that old OSes aren’t happy with the limited compatibility qemu gives, DOS kinda circumvents that because it doesn’t try much

@UpCloud 86box backed VMs when? You can be the only cloud provider allowing you to properly emulate ancient hardware lmao

@ChlorideCull @domi Imagine the cash firehose we'd have if we legitimately attracted 40yo legacy systems onto UpCloud with 86box and similar...
@UpCloud
I'm seriously considering trying your services if you advertise this kind of compatibility
@ChlorideCull @domi
@UpCloud @domi “You too can run your business critical Novell Netware 4.5 install in the ✨cloud✨”

@UpCloud @ChlorideCull real talk? if you offered 86box VMs or period-appropriate hardware, I’d probably get some just for fun.

for now i already host stuff like this myself (albeit not exactly 86box), it’s fun

@domi @UpCloud while integrating 86box would probably be too much work (unless someone makes a good wrapper that takes parameters like qemu!) it’s at least feasible

hosting era appropriate hardware in a data center feels incredibly funny, just imagining trying to guide some guy at the data center to change the jumpers on a board because one of your sticks of RAM died, or replacing an SRAM cache chip when socketed DIPs went out of fashion before they were born

@ChlorideCull @domi @UpCloud "a good wrapper that takes parameters"

what's wrong with programatically generating a config file?
@Rairii @ChlorideCull @UpCloud considering that most hosters have something closer to libvirt than qemu? yup, config files are just fine
@UpCloud @domi @Rairii In this case I meant more "a wrapper that can pretend enough to be qemu that you can just spin up another libvirt qemu driver instead of having to write an 86box libvirt driver"
@ChlorideCull Hello from WfW 3.11. 🥳 (Arachne kept crashing on me and I was too lazy to debug this, so this is the best I can do atm.)
