My employer receives a large amount in NIH grants annually. While they must have a buffer for 1-2 year budget impacts, I imagine the NIH cuts will close about 700,000 square feet of research space, basically 12 floors that can fit a football field on each floor.
That’s a lot of layoffs. A lot of rare disease research will be gone. That’s what will really hurt. That will probably not come back. Some of the equipment is custom made and manufactured nowhere else.

Now, faced with their losing jobs, scientists and professors will look to work overseas instead of in the US. It will gut US competitiveness.
Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst has hailed Elon Musk and the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency. So has Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds. Their constituents are following the cost-cutting effort closely. Unlike their top elected officials, several of the constituents are expressing concerns. Some question the delivery of government services or whether Musk has the necessary authority. Others back Musk, saying his action is needed given the risk of doing nothing to sharply curb federal spending.
