This probably just saved a lot of jobs. Now we need to protect Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security among many other smaller things.

The American Bar Association issued a statement on recent #Trump admin "attacks on constitutionally protected #BirthrightCitizenship, the dismantling of #USAID & the attempts to criminalize" #diversity initiatives as "wide-scale affronts to the rule of #law itself."

My employer receives a large amount in NIH grants annually. While they must have a buffer for 1-2 year budget impacts, I imagine the NIH cuts will close about 700,000 square feet of research space, basically 12 floors that can fit a football field on each floor.

That’s a lot of layoffs. A lot of rare disease research will be gone. That’s what will really hurt. That will probably not come back. Some of the equipment is custom made and manufactured nowhere else.

“I want great education, clean water, clean air, great health care. But I don’t believe a massive bureaucracy is the way to achieve those things,”

It’s all over the wire like here:

https://www.kob.com/news/us-and-world-news/are-americans-paying-attention-to-musk-and-trumps-doge-heres-what-people-in-iowa-had-to-say/

But the speaker is advocating cuts to what directly funds the great education and healthcare he wants.

Now, faced with their losing jobs, scientists and professors will look to work overseas instead of in the US. It will gut US competitiveness.

Are Americans paying attention to Musk and Trump's DOGE? Here's what people in Iowa had to say

Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst has hailed Elon Musk and the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency. So has Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds. Their constituents are following the cost-cutting effort closely. Unlike their top elected officials, several of the constituents are expressing concerns. Some question the delivery of government services or whether Musk has the necessary authority. Others back Musk, saying his action is needed given the risk of doing nothing to sharply curb federal spending.

@hacks4pancakes hear hear!

The academics trying to think their way around the norms with this are doing my fucking head in, all while people are actually being harmed

@hacks4pancakes The Comet hits Earth and 10 minutes later the final Fundraising Email from the Dems goes out.....

@hacks4pancakes It’s weird how when the Republicans were the minority, the democrats said their hands were tied.

And now the democrat minority leader is saying “it’s the republican’s government, now!” Seems like it was before, too. And now they just are glad they can get back to insider trading because *they* will be rich and okay, even if their constituents will suffer.

@keif @hacks4pancakes Regarding the bit on Insider Trading, I see that as the source of so many of the issues.

My hot take is that these congressional jobs don't pay enough. I can't consider running, because I couldn't maintain my primary home/retirement savings goals and have a place to stay in Washington, while fairly compensating staff.

It would be impossible for most reasonably successful "regular people" to take the job and ignore external financial support.

It's a government job, not unlike the military. The pay may not need to be adjusted, but living expenses should be covered. There should be taxpayer-funded lodging based on the number of dependents, a chow-hall, free utilities, just like the military.

@hacks4pancakes when the Dems didn't press the 14th Amendment issue it became pretty obvious they intended to just let it all happen.

@hacks4pancakes

I was at a Superbowl party yesterday and said, sort of rhetorically, "what do we do?" Rhetorically because almost everyone there are Dems. The answer I received from the most demmy Dem was "we wait two years and take the house and the Senate." I responded, "if the Dems don't do something soon, they'll lose again in two years."

I don't have enough characters to put the rest of the very vbnmw discussion. But my favorite answer was, "we need to do our version of the IRA."
Yes!

@hacks4pancakes I'm so so sorry. I feel this. Let me know if I can do anything to help from Canada 💚

@hacks4pancakes I lost faith in the DNC when they fucked over Bernie Sanders from the nomination the people voted him
In for.

He blew everyone else out of the water in primaries in WA. I was an area delegate and we had 11 of us for Bernie, one Hillary in West Seattle.

Patty Murray straight up told us she knew what was best for the country and wouldn’t be voting for Bernie as we stated we wanted her too with our votes.

Look where we are now.

@hacks4pancakes I posted a very similar sentiment re: Dems already with their hand out asking for money the other day. It’s beyond frustrating that the party seems to continue on doing the same thing - asking for money before showing any real change in their strategy or making any effort at something to reennergize the base (joining protests is a good start, mind you!) - and it’s good to know I’m not alone with that reaction.

@hacks4pancakes Here's a plan. https://statuskuo.substack.com/p/blunting-their-attacks

"Democratic voters can get behind this plan, too, by urging their representatives and senators to use the power of non-cooperation and defiance at every turn to help save our democracy. Trump and his billionaire buddies want to pass extensions of the Trump tax cuts, but they can’t do it with such a fractured GOP Congress."

More importantly and broadly, this.

Blunting Their Attacks

In the face of a looming constitutional crisis, where the administration refuses to obey direct court orders, we are not without some final cards to play.

The Status Kuo

@hacks4pancakes My next step is to contact my city council member and ask what we are doing locally to resist and throw sand in the gears of the Feds and the fascists at the local level.

If the leadership won't lead, make them follow. I need to put in some work but it's mostly pointless if I'm doing it alone. I have leverage that into getting someone else off their ass and working beside me. Multiply it and keep multiplying it. But don't wait a second for leadership to come from those in power that refuse to lead.

Oh, and for god's sake never argue with the i-took-the-principled-stand-of-doing-nothing-and-watching-the-world-burn-because-the-fire-truck-was-the-wrong-shade-of-red jagoffs. Ain't nobody has time for that adolescent flounce, especially right now.

@hacks4pancakes Anyway, the next time the Dem Fundraising Committee comes begging for cash, cue up "Starry Eyes" by The Records or whatever lifts and motivates you, and get to work locally. This is not a battle to be won by writing checks.

@hacks4pancakes I normally don't respond to blasts either. I have been responding with rational criticism and questions to the congressional rep's newsletter for the rural area I'm in. I'm rationally calling out nonsense without using personal attacks and checking the box for "I want a response".

Getting nothing. Not feeling represented by my representative.
