Short, loud, still mostly optimistic. Bookseller, cat person, child of the tropics.
THE GUNCLE by Steven Rowley. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
📚
What an unexpextedly delightful surprise this book was! Gay Uncle Patrick, or GUP, is a has-been TV sitcom star, who lives a comfortable and secluded life in Palm Springs. Suddenly he is thrust into the role of parent to his little niece and nephew when his sister-in-law (and best friend) dies, and his brother checks himself into rehab. He obviously adores the kids but being a fulltime caregiver to two grieving children is something else entirely, and he is still very much grieving the death of his partner Joe, many years before.
Patrick is a wonderful character. He is at once larger than life, flamboyant, and unwilling to talk down to the children or change his life. But he is also vulnerable, intuitive to the kids’ needs, and willing to grow into his role. The kids, Maisie and Grant, are beautifully drawn, full of grief, love for their uncle, and confused by his unorthodox adulting. The side characters are also warm, funny, and true to life.
For all that, this is Patrick’s story, though, and I loved the way he took a very difficult situation by the horns and made the best of it as he knew how. He makes mistakes but he’s willing to learn. His grief is tremendous, both over the old loss of his partner and the new loss of his best friend. Together with the kids he must find a way through.
I found this both warmly funny and a sensitive protrayal of grief. There are sticky situations aplenty, and Patrick navigates them all with heart and humor. Thank heavens I extended my library subscription and grabbed this book on a whim!

THE NAMES by Florence Knapp. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
📚
“It is 1987, and in the aftermath of a great storm, Cora sets out with her nine-year-old daughter to register the birth of her son. Her husband intends her to follow a long-standing family tradition and call the boy after him. But faced with the decision, Cora hesitates, questioning whether it is right for her child to share his name with generations of domineering men. Her choice in this moment will shape the course of their lives.”
📚
THE NAMES is a beautiful portrait of how someone’s choice can echo on into the decades beyond. In this case: what Cora names her son. Each name choice is loaded: Gordon is what her husband, also Gordon, explicitly wants him named. Julian is the name Cora finds the most fitting, as it means Sky Father and she finds that infinitely hopeful. Bear is what her 9 year-old daughter wants to call her little brother.

Each of her three choices are worked out in 7-year increments, and it’s both uplifting and heartbreaking, over and over again, to discover what each new period brings. Knapp cleverly weaves parallel choices for each of her characters – they’re not ever the same, but in line with the character, and the life laid out in that strand. Some characters become main characters in one strand, but remain in the background in others. Still, there is a continuous unity to all of the strands that is a truly excellent feat of the writing.

Above all, however, this is a sensitive, harrowing study of domestic violence and abuse, and how that affects absolutely everyone associated. The violence is not ever quite front and center, but inescapable nonetheless, and readers should be forewarned that this is a central theme to the book. Each life strand deals with it in its own way, and even in happy moments it’s a spectre in the background. I personally found it a powerful story, especially in showing how the abuse is a dominant theme even to those at quite a distance to it.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE by Jane Austen ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Absolute perfection 🥰 I was still in need of a comfort re-read and tumbled right in and loved it just as much as the first time I read (and the second, and the fifth, and the twelfth). My enjoyment was also helped by the brilliant low-budget 1995 BBC series reenactment by Ben Fensome on Instagram and TikTok (do look it up if you’re on one of those platforms, it’s so much fun!).

LETTERS FROM PEMBERLEY and MORE LETTERS FROM PEMBERLEY by Jane Dawkins ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Because I had a hard time quitting that world but didn’t want to start on another Austen right away. These letters are a sweet continuation of P&P, even if the author tries rather too hard to get every author Austen heroine in there under another name. Especially the second book has some heart-breaking parts.

LEGENDBORN by Tracy Deonn (in progress).
Slowly getting gripped by this Arthurian-inspired YA fantasy. It’s taking some time to set up the world, but I’m liking where it’s taking me so far. Bree as a main character is absolutely a teenager, but not too hormonally so (often my trouble spot when reading YA). I’m curious where the story will take me!

LEGENDBORN by Tracy Deonn (in progress)
Wanted to read this for a while now, and it’s quite good so far! Pacy, intriguing, and not too hormonally YA so far.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE by Jane Austen (in progress)
Because I still seem to need comfort re-reads, and there’s no better one than P&P. I’d forgotten how relentlessly paced this. But I hadn’t forgotten how snarky 😊

CRAZY RICH ASIANS, CHINA RICH GIRLFRIEND, and RICH PEOPLE PROBLEMS by Kevin Kwan ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
In need of a comfort re-read I turned to this trilogy and I loved it as much as the first time I read it. It’s funny, over-the-top, and deeper than its frothy covers suggest. A sprawling family saga whose Asian setting let me relive the sounds, smells, food, and crazy rich shenanigans I sometimes witnessed growing up there. 🥰🥰🥰

THE TAINTED CUP - Robert Jackson Bennett
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Buddy read with 3 colleagues and an unexpected delight! Murder/conspiracy mystery in a fantasy setting with agressively dangerous natural elements. And lovely main characters. Will definitely pick up the next book that just came out.

GREEK LESSONS by Han Kang
⭐️⭐️💫
Boeketie book club read, by a Nobel prize-winning author no less. I’m just no good with books where the only action is internal. I’m sure there’s a lot to dissect from this little book, but only with guided direction, I fear. Still, liked it better than THE VEGETARIAN.

CRAZY RICH ASIANS by Kevin Kwan (in progress)
Comfort re-read because my life is quite full at the moment. Loving it just as much as the first few times I read it, with its (nostalgic to me) South East Asian cultural references and food descriptions. It’s also a bit deeper than its frothy surface might have you think.

DEATH OF THE AUTHOR - Nnedi Okorafor (in progress)
I like the two storylines (including a book-in-a-book), and am curious to see where and how they will intersect at the end. The dynamic of a big and loud family, surprisingly unsupportive at times, is also captured well.

THE TAINTED CUP - Robert Jackson Bennett (in progress)
A buddy read with 3 of my colleagues. A murder/conspiracy mystery in a fantasy setting - and what a setting! Lush and dangerous and intricate. Thoroughly delightful main characters, too.

GREEK LESSONS - Han Kang (in progress)
My Boeketie book club book. Odd, silent, inward, much like the other book I’ve read by her (THE VEGETARIAN). But less frustrating than that one.
