It's the spooky season, & with our chums at the Filmhouse screening the 1925 silent version of Phantom of the Opera (with live music!), & Del Toro's Frankenstein adaptation imminent, it's the perfect time to revisit the original, classic novels.

Shelley Fisher Fishkin's new book, Jim, about Huck Finn's companion, just arrived from Yale University Press. A perfect companion to Percival Everett's acclaimed novel, James, and, of course, the original Huckleberry Finn by the esteemed Sam Clemens.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE by Jane Austen ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Absolute perfection 🥰 I was still in need of a comfort re-read and tumbled right in and loved it just as much as the first time I read (and the second, and the fifth, and the twelfth). My enjoyment was also helped by the brilliant low-budget 1995 BBC series reenactment by Ben Fensome on Instagram and TikTok (do look it up if you’re on one of those platforms, it’s so much fun!).

LETTERS FROM PEMBERLEY and MORE LETTERS FROM PEMBERLEY by Jane Dawkins ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Because I had a hard time quitting that world but didn’t want to start on another Austen right away. These letters are a sweet continuation of P&P, even if the author tries rather too hard to get every author Austen heroine in there under another name. Especially the second book has some heart-breaking parts.

LEGENDBORN by Tracy Deonn (in progress).
Slowly getting gripped by this Arthurian-inspired YA fantasy. It’s taking some time to set up the world, but I’m liking where it’s taking me so far. Bree as a main character is absolutely a teenager, but not too hormonally so (often my trouble spot when reading YA). I’m curious where the story will take me!
