"home.social will close down on June, 16th 2023 23:59 CET."

This is regrettable, although I appreciate the reasoning (- which highlights underlying issues). Mastodon was an interesting experiment at a time when it seemed a necessary step. However, it's never really 'taken off' for me - perhaps that's down to my usage - and I am not convinced that migration, with its limitations (and the risk of moving to a server which itself closes down) is worth the effort. I'll decide before the deadline.

My garden suffers from three nearby streetlights - I live on a corner - and some highly invasive bright domestic 'security' lights. None are actually necessary, all waste energy and are detrimental to wildlife as well as stargazing.
That's why I signed this petition to begin to tackle light pollution:

Petition: Introduce 'Right To Dark' law for home and business properties

Make a law that would make any artificial light trespass from one property to neighbouring properties an offence. Such lighting would include: security, safety, decorative and business display lighting.

Iโ€™ve just signed and numbered 100 copies of my book and people are sharing photos of their copies! ๐Ÿ˜Š Sometimes I love the internet. Hi all! Making things just a little bit easier on myself and consolidating my two "life" accounts from my astronomy server and the general purpose server to universeodon, which seems to be a nice general purpose but nerd-aligned server (perfect for me!)

For new folks on this server seeing me in the feed, I'm a dad of a toddler, I work in cloud health data science, and most effusively post about my pursuit of #astrophotography. I shoot with a small refractor and a dedicated astro camera. Here's my latest work! https://www.astrobin.com/fmdcxo/G/

I've lived in Washington, DC since 2009 but about to embark on a journey west to Phoenix, AZ, to get closer to family.

My other hobby is #biketooter, and especially e-bikes. I ride around a Rad Runner ebike and a beloved Steel road bike.

I talk about work related stuff (Python, R, and AWS especially) at @ryderdavid. Nice to meet you! And nice to have a couple fewer social accounts!

A small #AstroPhysicsfactlet for Easter.

As much as we like the Universe, we must admit it is trying to kill us every day by sending onto our atmosphere a huge quantity of space debris, potentially lethal cosmic rays and high energetic particles from the solar wind.

On the other hand, we produce a huge amount of chocolate to compensate for the stress of surviving.

So what is larger every day: the total mass of space material falling onto our planet, or the amount of chocolate we produce?

In the end, not a bad day of playing at being an astronomer:
Tuesday's playtime: a fairly quiet Sun, an almost full Moon and a binary star which turns out to be a triplet ... ๐Ÿ™‚
I thought today might be a good one to hunt sunspots but it turns out that there's far more cloud than my app predicted. I'll use the time to bed in a few new bits and pieces - there's usually a bright side ... ๐Ÿ™‚

SDG 18 - Sky Quality and Access to Starlight

Currently, the three main classes of threats to the quality of the night sky and to access to starlight are: artificial night light (ALAN), the emission of radio wavelengths and the contrails of satellites in Earth orbit. low (LEO). The inappropriate and abusive use of outdoor lighting, especially in urban areas, makes it increasingly difficult โ€ฆ Home Read More ยป

I've enjoyed writing all the posts on my 'life-of-a-scientist' blog (and my creative writing blog, but that's for another day). I wouldn't have posted them were that not the case. It occasionally intrigues me, however, why one of them gets over 1000 views and another a few dozen. Perhaps it's down to the interaction between search engines and the titles I give the posts? Oh well, c'est la vie ...
