Professor in #Astrophysics at the University of Bologna and former #ERC grantee.
I study the cosmic web, extragalactic magnetism and clusters of galaxies with colorful simulations.

This model considered that some radio jets, instead of fast moving plasmas ejected by AGN, can be the result of high energy beams of gamma-rays which convert into electron-positron pairs, and then emit via synchrotron if they encounter a high enough (>10nG) magnetic field in filaments.

I spoke of this scenario here: https://mastodon.social/@franco_vazza/113429246617344393

We actually thought of killing this model with cosmological simulations..but we could not and the models survives. More in a future publication

Kudos to Valerio Tritapepe, who has successfully defended his Master Thesis in #astrophysics last Friday at the University of #Bologna

Valerio has for the first time attempted a statistical validation or rejection of an unorhtodox model (by Neronov, myself et al. https://arxiv.org/abs/2411.01640) to explain the existence of the longest and straightest radio jets in the Universe, based on realistic simulations of the magnetic cosmic web.
He got the highest grade (110+Laude) šŸ¾

Here is a magic string of words to make sure absolutely no one in their right mind will listen to you:

Lots of fascinating detail in the plasma tail of #comet C/2025 R3 (PANSTARRS) this morning in an image by Christoph Gerhard with a 30-cm telescope: https://www.klostersternwarte.de/aktuelles/ein-%C3%BCberraschender-komet-c-2025-r3-panstarrs - this one will stay with us (Northerners) for another three week low before/at dawn before getting lost in the Sun's glare (when dust forward scattering could brighten it even more).

Please enjoy this stunning collection of portraits of #solar surface turmoils, #flares and else, all produced by Carlo Casoli's from the University of #Bologna with his own telescope and filters:

really really impressive details of magnetic-field driven structures across many scales!

I like this infographic showing different modalities of propagation for charged and neutral cosmic rays in the cosmic web, in this new article on #astroph

of High-Energy Cosmic Rays in Magnetized Astrophysical
and Cosmological Structures" by E. Owen et al. https://arxiv.org/pdf/2603.25060

#AI drama: beside all obvious problems, I am now quite imaging a long term additional problem caused by the use(which always is an abuse) of #LLM by students.
You will risk to have #imposter_syndrome all your life, if all important tasks of research (reading articles, summarising them, write down your research, code up your analysis etc) are outsources since the very beginning to any #LLM model.
Any thesis time is exactly meant to help you learn these basic steps!

AI it's a super powerful tool, for example I have recently praised its usage in code translation, in a problem for which I have full control of the result
https://mastodon.social/@franco_vazza/116240011485637819
but it's a TOOL.
it's just crazy to think you must, especially when you're forming, or just at any age, primarily rely on this tool to build your scientific career.
crazy and irresponsible
I know, I am old.
