Imagine, man würde alle Superreichen konsequent fair besteuern.
@MeierSchulze Danke 🙏
Einfach so angenommen.

@ExtinctionR

It has 'me' in it, so it should catch on like wildfire.

@ExtinctionR or Fossil Gas, which is a term some environmental groups use.
@ExtinctionR “Meth” for short, it’s catchier
@ExtinctionR @Viss natural does not mean good. If that's an association, may I suggest getting rid of that misconception?
@mpldr
I'm pretty sure it will be a *lot* easier to just rename natural gas...
@ExtinctionR @Viss
@ExtinctionR I agree with the sentiment but not with the etymology. The term was not propaganda but rather to distinguish it from artificially made town gas.
@jef @ExtinctionR and I was suitably horrified to learn town gas was a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Pumped into people's homes!

@ExtinctionR

Today I learned that Natural Gas as extracted from the ground is a variable mix of hydrocarbon components, which usually includes mostly methane (CH4), along with ethane (C2H6), propane (C3H8) and butane (C4H10). Other gases also occur in natural gas, notably CO2.

LNG is mostly Methane with traces of Ethane as it's been purified by the liquifaction process.

A great many things that exist in nature are described more or less accurately as natural but natural doesn't always imply good for individual or groups if people to interact with them inappropriately.

@ExtinctionR It has been called natural gas since the 19th century. 🙄
@ExtinctionR The full scientific term is "methane phetamine" which translates to "addictive climate killer".
@ExtinctionR Actually "natural gas" was simply to distinguish it from the more familiar "coal gas", and indicated that the gas came out of the ground as is, it didn't need to be manufactured.
@TimWardCam @ExtinctionR AKA 'town gas' here in the UK
@ExtinctionR And if you encounter a smartypants, call it "mostly methane" instead.

@ExtinctionR
I may be wrong, so I'd love to know if you've done any research on the term, but I fear the general populace's ignorance/lack of interest can still be exploited by using 'methane' without specifically stating it is a fossil fuel?

Therefore my preference would be to always refer to it at least once in relevant communications as 'fossil fuel gas' as that phrase has already permeated the consciousness of the electorate with its link to global warming (whether they deny it or not).

@ExtinctionR A terminological study led by the Language Council of Sweden found that the preferred term in Swedish should be “fossilgas” (fossil gas), with the non-deprecated synonym “naturgas” (natural gas).

fossilgas

eng: natural gas

@ExtinctionR isn't natular gas a mix of primarily methane but also some other hydrocarbons? So calling it methane makes it sound purer than it is. A better term would be Dirty Methane then
@ExtinctionR TBH my biggest gripe is how many americans think 'gas power generation' means gasoline rather than methane.

@ExtinctionR

"Fossil gas".

Or "corpse gas" if you're feeling spicy!

"Methane" makes it sound like a single chemical, which it isn't; it's a mixture of all sorts of crap.

@ExtinctionR
The Germans call it "ground gas".

Methane is not precise, biogas - aka cow farts - is also methane. And while burning ground/natural gas is bad, because it releases CO2, burning biogas is good because releasing methane is worse than releasing CO2.

I agree that natural gas is a bad term, I have had to explain to my brother that natural gas is dinosaur gas, biogas is the term for cow gas.

Ground gas, dinosaur gas, fossil gas - all better terms.

@leeloo @ExtinctionR I guess it was called natural gas in the first place to distinguish it from the synthetic mixture of methane and carbon monoxide people used to (in some places, still do, I think) produce from coal and sell as a fuel.
@ExtinctionR It`s called "Erdgas" in German -> meaning "Earth Gas" or "Ground Gas" ->much nearer to the truth
@ExtinctionR "Earth gas". Like in German and many other languages.
