It’ll never catch on for the sole reason of how punishing getting banned is. It’s a digital eviction done by a digital HOA. Mastodon encourages you to form intimate communities, but those communities aren’t given any real say in how they’re run. And if you get thrown out of your community by those in charge, there’s no getting that back. Worse still is how your instance is tied to your follows, so you have to rebuild from scratch after a ban. Users won’t take to that.
