May there be more compassionate and kind people defining our public life and body politic in 2023.

Kindness is a Show of Strength (redux)

It’s the flip side of cruelty and hate, an act or way of being that can exude confidence and illuminate optimism. Showing kindness offers a bracing contrast to those who are always hitting back or punching down, grimly convinced that to do otherwise is an expression of weakness.

America, America

Somehow get from New York City to Maine after our plane was canceled due to extreme weather (via rental car): Check.

Take long walk with family on Christmas Day with 17 degrees and four layers: Check.

Return to inn and drink two glasses of red wine bought at local grocery upon arrival: Check.

Feeling grateful, despite so much trouble in the body politic: Check.

It's day 7 of me and some other journalists being suspended on Twitter because we reported factual public information that Twitter's "free speech absolutist" owner didn't like.

This is the first time in ~17 yrs that the majority of the people in my network are talking to each other in public via an open protocol on community-run servers rather than a startup's service.

It's really nice to have gotten here, in a way that's entwined not only with nostalgic feelings, but also their optimistic underpinnings that were the reason I was interested in all this in the first place.

I heard there was another look-at-me antic on the old site, and it was my pleasure not to care.

I imagine MoveToDon will get booted by Twitter soon. So I would highly recommend using it if you haven’t or running it again to see who has set up and accounts from your follow list.
Fiona Hill, October 2022: "It's very clear Elon Musk is transmitting a message for Putin. ... Putin plays on the egos of big men, gives them a sense that they can play a role. But in reality, they're just direct transmitters of messages from Vladimir Putin. https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2022/10/17/fiona-hill-putin-war-00061894
Fiona Hill: ‘Elon Musk Is Transmitting a Message for Putin’

Eight months into Russia’s war against Ukraine, POLITICO talks to the Russia analyst about whether Putin’s aims are evolving and what it would take to end the war.

I don't think journalists (in general) -- and certainly not the organizations they work for -- fully understand the threat Musk represents to the future of free expression and journalism itself.

Begging him to reinstate the banned accounts is pure folly. It is bended-knee supplication to a sociopath who now controls a powerful media company. But the power of his company depends in no small degree on keeping journalists there.

Leave. Now.

I am once again locked out of Twitter.

Twitter just locked my account after I asked Twitter's head of Trust & Safety Ella Irwin why I haven't been informed of what tweet broke Twitter's policies

Seems they forgot to force me to delete the tweet the first time, like they did the other suspended journalists.

This is the tweet they want me to delete to get back into my account:

Reducing a $44bn asset to rubble is a lesson in dictatorship. It is entirely the fault of those charged with regulating online spaces and anti-trust, and definitely the fault of those advocating for a free market approach *just in case* the opposite of that is worse. The blind faith in ‘free markets’, when markets are rigged, partial , enormously favoring of the ruling elites *unless regulated*. Where is the self-reflection among the governance crowd for this complete disaster?
‘Opening the gates of hell’: Musk says he will revive banned accounts

A Twitter poll posted by Elon Musk shows 72 percent support granting “general amnesty” to accounts suspended for harassment, abuse and misinformation.
