The vastly wealthy Lord Penrhyn reinvested profits from the Atlantic slave trade into developing his slate quarry in north Wales - that lay on common ground he used his influence to acquire.
The second Lord Penrhyn was very thin-skinned and unforgiving, punishing even the slightest dissent very harshly.
