This is why we avoid having anything to do with "gig economy" businesses. The workers get screwed while the corporate overlords hoard all of the money.

They counted tips toward the minimum wage, wouldn't pay for mileage, "settled" for a quarter of what workers were entitled, but now they say they don't have any money.

F*** THESE PEOPLE!

Madison food delivery giant EatStreet predicts insolvency, foreclosure

In a Friday court filing, EatStreet said it can no longer pay $1.2 million to settle a lawsuit brought by workers. Workers’ attorneys question that claim.

With so many transit agencies cutting fares, I wondered how they were making up for the lost revenues.

It turns out many of them are leveraging temporary federal reliefs funds, and they'll probably need new revenue streams if they're not going to jeopardize service quality or potential expansions.

Continued fare-free transit will require new funding streams

Fare-free transit has made headlines recently as more agencies propose bold plans to cut costs for riders. The latest ambitious proposal comes from Washington, D.C., which will eliminate fares on all bus rides in the city starting July 1 while also expanding 24-hour service. This is especially beneficial for low-income riders, although transit advocates often worry that eliminating fare revenues could force agencies to cut service or prevent them from making necessary improvements. These concerns raise important questions. How are these programs being paid for, and what are the prospects that they will be sustainable?

@waldoj 100% agree!!

Work: Please review this draft ordinance for a proposed streetlight program. There’s also an attached manual that’s about 30 pages long.

Me: OMG, IT’S A STREETLIGHT MANIFESTO!!

The House just passed an atrocious $858 BILLION in annual defense spending.

That's $45B more than Biden even asked for.

Health care?
"We can't afford it."

Child tax credit?
"Too expensive."

Defense spending?
"Here I just found an extra $45 billion dollars laying around."

I can’t believe that’s not my starter word. #Wordle

Meet the Gen Z'ers behind the Kenneth Mejia for Los Angeles City Controller campaign.

"We used logic and reason to convince people that policing and prisons are ineffective, a waste of tax money, and create more harm in our society."

"You don't mess with Gen Z: Because not only are they going to find the data, they're going to troll you."

🤔"Now, economists warn that policymakers’ inertia and the resulting reliance on employers to administer paid leave and child care is creating two distinct workplaces for women — and risks exacerbating racial and gender inequality for decades to come."

The Pandemic Has Created Two Very Different Kinds of Workplaces. That Especially Matters for Women.

The hot labor market and the pandemic have led employers to offer better perks, including generous care policies. But that's only one part of the story.

“In Trenton, almost one-sixth of properties were purchased by institutional buyers between 2012-2020 — the largest shift by a municipality in the years the report analyzed.

The report says when institutions scoop up residential properties in lower-income areas, that decreases the housing stock and drives up home prices much higher than in neighborhoods with fewer corporate owners.” https://gothamist.com/news/more-nj-homes-are-owned-by-institutions-report-finds-thats-hurting-affordability

More NJ homes are owned by institutions, report finds. That's hurting affordability.

A report by the Department of Community Affairs released Thursday found a 2.5% increase in institutional homeownership between 2012-2020.
