Treating childcare like any other home business is a mistake. One thing Lowell gets right is allowing childcare facilities citywide by-right to avoid special permit shenanigans like we see in Austin. https://www.lowellma.gov/DocumentCenter/View/6613/181211-Lowell-Zoning-Ordinance https://twitter.com/ehaspel/status/1620409343140298754

I focus a lot on the child care workforce, but child welfare professionals (& for that matter, home health aides & elder care professionals) suffer from many of the same ills, all coming from the root of not enough public $ in care-focused systems.

We need a new ethic of care.

Child welfare workforce (CPS, foster care, adoption) has huge turnover (30%-40%) because of low pay, large caseloads, and intense work.

We have GOT to fix zoning for family child cares:

"The city’s case against King’s day care is only partly about golf ... King lives—like most Americans—in a neighborhood reserved for single-family homes, in a city that places substantial restrictions on home businesses."

I'm sure these results are going to get the same amount of attention as that TN Pre-K study did, right?

"We found that college enrollment was 12% higher for Tulsa pre-K alumni compared with former students who did not attend Tulsa pre-K or Head Start."

Will behaviour change if intellectuals champion marriage & engaged fatherhood?

Afaik, there is zero evidence that men who shun marriage are swayed by ‘us’.

(Nothing against SMoV! They're great! My kids loved going. I'm sure their camps are great. But we probably shouldn't be crashing websites because we don't have enough viable summer care options)

It doesn't have to be this way, y'all.

Looks like parents are excited for camp this summer! Demand for summer camp registration has crashed our website. We're aware & working as quickly as possible to resolve the issue. Thanks for your patience. #rva

How Finding Summer Child Care Became a Competition

The “every family for itself” approach to child care in the U.S. means parents’ options for three months of the year are shelling out for expensive camps, fighting for limited slots in affordable programs, or nothing.
