Cool to see how much progress California has made defeating the "duck curve". same day 5 years apart, and the spike at sunset is almost completely supplied by batteries
The discourse surrounding precipitation changes in a warming climate (both public discussion and even scientific one at times) is complicated by widespread conflation of changes in averages vs extremes (and also actual vs *potential* evaporation/evaporative demand). [Thread]
The fact that I can click on a scientific article link and hit a paywall in 2025–when the scientists were paid with public money, the research conducted in public institutions, and the cost of publication subsidized by public funds–is an abject failure of society.

In 2023, astronomers detected a cosmic blast so powerful it released more energy than ALL THE STARS IN THE UNIVERSE COMBINED. The cause: two black holes colliding and merging… which is a problem, because they were way bigger than we thought possible.

The biggest black hole merger ever detected so far rocked the Universe

The gravitational waves they emitted were fiercely powerful, but where did the black holes come from?

Ex-farm worker here.

We need to talk about this whole "But a living wage for farm workers would spike the cost of food!" thing.

Not true AT ALL.

Y'all don't understand how fast experienced farm workers are.

The average tomato picker pulls 650lbs per hour.

At $20/hr, that's $0.03/lb for labor.

@cinebox

I have a time of day rate plan. I don't recall exactly when it happened but at some point PG&E "peak" rates stopped being during the day and started being 4pm to 9pm. I have responded by changing my flexible usage outside of those hours. For me that's car charging, laundry, and dishwasher. Most months I have at least 75% of usage during the lowest cost hours.

@cinebox Finally, some good news in my feed!
@cinebox Also, #California ns, pls contact your Assembly member & ask to oppose #SB540 the Parhways bill that would forfeit electrical power control over to an inter-state board https://consumerwatchdog.org/energy/consumer-watchdog-calls-on-ca-senators-to-pledge-to-leave-public-office-if-their-vote-for-pathways-western-grid-leads-trumps-ferc-to-invalidate-clean-energy-laws/
Consumer Watchdog Calls On CA Senators To Pledge to Leave Public Office If Their Vote For Pathways Western ...

Sacramento, CA – Consumer Watchdog wrote to California State Senators today warning them that a pending proposal, SB 540 (Becker) to create a Western regional grid could lead to overriding of key state environmental laws, including the Renewal Portfolio Standards (RPS), which sets deadlines for clean energy goals. “If California’s renewal portfolio standard is invalidated,
