This was the exquisite Gothic Revival Newburgh Savings Bank building located in the City of Newburgh, NY. Designed by architect Frederick Clarke Withers in 1868 and tragically demolished in 1970. Only a few weeks later and a few blocks away, Newburgh's 1893 Palatine Hotel would also be demolished, among the other architectural gems demolished in the name of "urban renewal" or just grossly neglected in Newburgh.

USS Nautilus - First nuclear powered submarine initially launched in 1954, christened with a bottle of champagne by then First Lady Mamie Eisenhower at the U.S. Naval Base, Groton, CT. It was decommissioned in 1980 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1982. The vessel is now on exhibit at the Submarine Force Museum on the Thames River at Groton. #photography #architecture #military #design #boats #maritime

The Flatiron, the storied office building in Manhattan, designed by Chicago architect Daniel Burnham and completed in 1902, will be converted into luxury housing, its owners announced on Thursday.

The proposal is aimed at starting a second life for the Flatiron — its sole office tenant, Macmillan Publishers, departed before the pandemic. In March, a little-known buyer won an auction for the building, only to disappear without paying. #architecture #photography #historicpreservation #NYC

After reading about Pres Biden's recent issues with dogs in the White House, I remembered Pete. He was Theodore Roosevelt's possible pit-bull terrier who was put on a train & exiled west after biting numerous people, including a French diplomat. I came across this when it fell out of a Roosevelt family album while doing research at TR's home. The archivist was surprised to see it. I thought I might as well stop hoarding it and share it. I love this photo. #dogs #animals #photography

Here's another, kinder example of the adaptive reuse of a similar "psychiatric hospital" - the Buffalo State Asylum, renamed the Richardson Olmsted Campus after restoration. Opened 1872, designed by H.H. Richardson, grounds also designed by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted, similar to the Hudson River State Hospital in Poughkeepsie. Hudson River State Hospital, Poughkeepsie, New York - Frederick Clarke Withers, Architect, grounds by Vaux & Olmsted. Opened as a psychiatric hospital in 1871. Closed and abandoned in 2012, now being developed as a residential and commercial multi-use site under the name "Hudson Heritage." Some of the remaining buildings are in the process of demolition while others are being altered and adapted for reuse. #architecture #HudsonValley #NewYork #photography
