I hear a lot of talk that the #fediverse doesn't use #algorithms. But is there anything that would stop an instance from providing curation through their own implementation? In other words, there is nothing forcing an instance to implement the reference server right?

@[email protected] @blabberlicious @mori_au @GossiTheDog isn't one of the main benefits of federation and protocol over platform, that the users who wish to be in a small space can create or join am instance that doesn't federate with the greater system? I don't see why there can't be multiple large federations and thousands of smaller scale ones.
