Minnesota lawmaker’s alleged killer had list of data broker websites in car, FBI says

Details about the investigation of a man suspected in the murder of a Minnesota state legislator have drawn attention to the information that data brokers keep and sell about people.

I'm not going to do a global political analysis right now.

I am going to tell you that I'm just old enough to remember the last time we had this same stupid fucking war, and tell anyone under 30: Do not enlist in the military. They will ruin your life and they do not care. Please don't do it.

Following a rich white man to war because you didn’t like the sound of a black woman laughing will go down in American history as one of the stupidest things ever.
There's always a tweet #MAGA

It's 1991, and a republican president is embroiling us in a bullshit war in the Middle East.

It's 2003, and a republican president is embroiling us in a bullshit war in the Middle East.

It's 2025, and a republican president is embroiling us in a bullshit war in the Middle East.

Time once again to post Get Your War On #1. From 2001. Time is a flat circle.

It's once again time for the Breaking News Consumer's Handbook:

  • In the immediate aftermath, news outlets will get it wrong.
  • Don't trust anonymous sources.
  • Don't trust stories that cite another news outlet as the source of the information.
  • There's almost never a second shooter.
  • Pay attention to the language the media uses.
    • "We are getting reports"…could mean anything.
    • "We are seeking confirmation"…means they don't have it.
    • "[News outlet] has learned"…means it has a scoop or is going out on a limb.
  • Look for news outlets close to the incident.
  • Compare multiple sources.
  • Big news brings out the fakers. And photoshoppers.
  • Beware reflexive retweeting. Some of this is on you.
  • Once again, see the original blog post for elaboration and comments on all these points.

    The "Smith-Pittman" algorithm is now available as a Python implementation for #igraph users!

    Leverage node degree and edge betweenness in community detection with this Girvan-Newman styled algorithm.

    mass protests right now in every major American city and most of the minor ones too. the New York Times is a conservative newspaper.
    this is the newspaper that will dispatch a thousand reporters to a thousand fucking diners to take the pulse of America, but I guess millions of people spending their Saturday at hundreds (thousands??) of marches across the country isn't "news"
    meanwhile, at the gathering they **are** covering:
    @peter
    It is proof of their irrelevance.
    @peter News is not news if the power class is against it. Reminds me of the complete lack of coverage of the millions of people who've been protesting a genocide.
    @peter This burns me up. Probably the only opinion that I share with right wing people is that mainstream media is failing us (though I’d obviously disagree on how it’s failing us). So frustrating.

    @peter

    The New York Times has lost the plot - if it ever had it - but here's how to make icecream... FFS! 😐

    @peter
    You misspelled fascist.
