Brett Scott about the "sharing" #economy:

"When detached from a community foundation, markets can bring out peopleโ€™s most anxious, petty, arrogant, and narcissistic sides [...]"

"If we are going to turn ourselves into a sprawling network of micro-entrepreneurs, micro-contracting via a feudalistic platform, letโ€™s at least cooperatively own the platform."

@stefanieschulte
Somehow I'd missed Uber's being a part of a "Sharing" economy. I didn't actually know about it at all until it was around for a while. A friend told me about Uber and Lyft when I was visiting California and when I found out a phone app was needed to use it I didn't even bother trying. I'm pretty sure there wasn't an Android version of the app yet, but I was pretty clear that one had to pay the driver, so I called a taxi and paid the taxi driver, as always.

@Euphoria Yes, I think "sharing economy" is really kind of a misnomer for businesses like this. The author I cited above makes this point, and others agree, see e. g.: https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2016/05/sharing-economy-airbnb-uber-yada/484505/

"Platform economy" might be more accurate. Some people use the term "platform capitalism", too.

I totally forgot that I'd been reading his piece, got a phone call, got distracted and never finished reading it. So silly of me!
@Euphoria This happens easily on social media and with "microblogging" in particular, I think! There are so many links and sources... it's hard to keep track!
@stefanieschulte So true. It's amazing how some people manage it so well while still getting other work done.

@Euphoria I guess some people like or share social media posts without even clicking the links in them, or they post comments without reading the material.

On Mastodon, however, many people seem to really read the articles/publications.

@stefanieschulte I wish I could say that I never share something I haven't read in entirely, but it wouldn't be true. I try to remember to /say/ that I haven't read it if I haven't, i.e., "Putting this here so I'll remember to read it later" or "when I have a better connection", as I have issues with pages loading due to my connection sometimes. It can be especially difficult on Twitter, with such strict character limitations. Thank goodness I've got Mastodon now!

I post often urls for future reading and here on Mastodon I'm using Toki Pona hashtags to be able to find them back...

Did you intentionally spell your hashtag #CharcterLimit ?

I did a partial tokiponization on the name Mastodon and I keep using it #Matodon because it's unique in that way ...

#Mastodon #CharacterLimit
#Matodon #nimi_lon #sona

No, @jansegers, it was a typo. I don't know what Toki Pona is. Seems like something interesting, although it's easy enough to find Mastodon hashtags.

@jansegers
Very interesting. I'm surprised I hadn't heard about it before. Thank you for bringing it to my attention!
