As you settle into Mastodon, be sure to learn the lingo:
- "toot": a tweet
- "tusking": starting a pointless fight with another user
- "woolly": going viral, as in "wow, that toot really went woolly"
- "extinction event": when a whole instance goes down
@nolan I would reserve "extinction event" for when the last Tweep migrates to these moisty pastures.
@timp hell yeah, in this timeline it's the birds that go extinct baby
@nolan This is why I like Amaroq
@spiderrobotpig because it's just full of my toots? :D

@nolan Yah!

That and it changes every instance of toot to awoo

@spiderrobotpig ohhhh didn't even notice! Tusky doesn't do that, looks like fruit users have a different experience from droid users :)
@nolan a veritable Mastodon 101.
@nolan "ice age": when there isn't any activity in the entire network of all instances.
@deadsuperhero ugggg too real
@nolan "dinosaurs": other federated networks
@nolan I'm still not sure about the whole toot thing, but I'm down for woolly lol
@cc especially since the originating toot was woolly af
@nolan "I was tusking in a toot which went wooly and caused an extinction event" Like that?
@deathpigeon wow sounds like a dank fuckin toot
@nolan Brilliant! What about "stampede" when an instance overloads with new registrations?
@josh @nolan That reminds me of Puppet's Thundering Herd problem.
@nolan pretty sure you just made these up
@animeirl you catch on fast don't you
@nolan I love Woolly so much

@nolan I've been using "Tusking" for blocking.

And "boosting" should be "trumpeting".

/me stomps down.

@nolan thanks a lot for the Mastodon terms, I'm learning
@nolan

- "paleo": a fediverse hipster
@nolan Tusking. Pointless. I see what you did there.
@nolan
Giving these the official Mastolinguistโ˜‘๏ธ seal of approval
So looks like I just recovered from an extinction event.
@nolan
I would like more attestation of these. Toot I know, but I've never heard the others. Let's call it #linguistics research: can you find me examples from before you posted if other people using these words?
@nolan @DialMforMara I've used "woolly" or "wooly" a few times.
@bstacey @nolan @DialMforMara Wait, people actually use those terms? I was SURE the original post was sarcastic...
Re: LB, I'd not heard tusking before, but all of these are great

@wolfie I haven't heard tusking before, but it's good!

I do still use "wooly" though :)

@nolan The last one should really be an โ€œELEโ€, extiction level event, as in Deep Impact.
@nolan add โ€˜fossilโ€™: someone whoโ€™s been here for 5 years or longer.
@nolan I really like that last one. Extinction event ๐Ÿ˜
@nolan So, in this context, does twitter count as an "instance"? 'cause I feel an extinction event coming on
@nolan with these terms it really is starting to feel like home!
