Creative block as to how the Mastodon /about page should really look. Don't want to make it too similar to joinmastodon.org, or people might get confused. But I love the joinmastodon.org design so much now
When your "how it works" section is ready to summon Satan https://mastodon.social/media/JToxDgay3QEABheW9qA
Shout out to @dopatwo for drawing all these elephants
@Gargron With the star being up that way I figured it was a shout out to the wiccans on here
@Gargron Loving that graphic, though.
@Gargron @dopatwo How it works
@dopatwo @Gargron (not to imply I don't think the graphic is good or something, I think it's great, and visualizing the network with a star shape shows how everyone can be connected well)
@Gargron the hardest part of the spell is where to find multicolour elephants!

@Gargron

d'awwww! cute!

(and also anything that might help keep rabid zombie fundies away is a nice side benefit, IMO)

@Gargron Can we change it to six elephants so it scares and confuses neo-nazis?
@Gargron a loveable friendly Satan (a summoned Satan's disposition is directly proportional to how the pentagram is drawn)
@Gargron perhaps try going from what purpose / audience each of them has, and identify differences, move from there? :)
@eylul one has to present mastodon the software/network. one has to present a particular place - e.g. mastodon.art, what makes it special, but ALSO make sure ppl are aware it's mastodon and what it is.

@Gargron *nods*. So joinmastodon is a one size fits all explanation that explains what the network is (often for the purpose of people choosing a node).

One big contrast I see is that rather than an efficient design, the about page also needs some flexibility. A template can be nice, but the power of each node is that they can explain what mastodon is in a way that is optimized to their community, rather than a happy medium. [cont]

@Gargron also another thing that can vary is that, we have nodes that are directly related to mastodon, vs those that are tied to ongoing communities who wanted this extra communication channel. So they might need less explanation.

I am thinking out loud here so the question is:

how do people come to node directly? (from where?) and in those cases how much do they need to know and what do they need to know? if this makes any sense.
