Reviewers noted that while Vim for Gameboy featured one of the deepest command systems on the platform, its soundtrack consisted primarily prolonged silence punctuated with occasional terrifying beeps.

@NanoRaptor

Front Toward Enemy is a nice touch.

@Uair @NanoRaptor pretty shure that's necessary because #Nintendo lawyers will sue everyone into insolvency at the slightest chance!
@Uair @NanoRaptor especially since the enemy is yourself 🀣
@NanoRaptor Huh, I'm actually surprised to learn that Vim had that logo already in 2001. I always thought that came about much more recently, but nope, archive.org shows it plain as day. http://web.archive.org/web/20010707032935/https://www.vim.org/

@NanoRaptor Exiting is *so* much harder in this version. You'd think you could just turn the Gameboy off, but that only makes it very cross at you.
@NanoRaptor This is what happens when you don't get @chipzel on the job.
@NanoRaptor hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee "front toward enemy" hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee
@NanoRaptor The best part is that the cartridge has pins that lock itself to the device until you manage to enter :q or ZZ on just the arrow keys, A, B, Select and Start.
@NanoRaptor it came with a ps/2 to game link adapter of course (wait that sounds like it would actually work?!)
@NanoRaptor honestly that would be a good cw for all pc-speaker-beep-having text consoles

@NanoRaptor

"Front Toward Enemy"

Period appropriate would be Emacs, but post Cold Editor War, it's probably VS Code

@NanoRaptor I accidentally thought I could play this game, but *still* haven't figured out how to get the cartridge out of my gameboy :’(

@NanoRaptor

Was there a color version for advanced syntax highlighting?

@NanoRaptor

I only noticed the FRONT TOWARD ENEMY after sending this to a friend. excellent work

@NanoRaptor

when I'm on attack
ain't nuthin to do
you about to get jacked

@NanoRaptor The claymore labels are an inspired choice. I love it.
@NanoRaptor the spiritual successor "NotePad 3: The Re-Padding" was not particularly well received by game critics at the time. Centuries later, it was finally recognised as a cult classic.
@NanoRaptor
many vim fans missed to try the android hardcore input editor to replace complete software keyboard layout app. It requires deep learning with sensitives gestures to hit every letter step by step.

@NanoRaptor

i cant evel tell whether this is a joke or not. given the vim fanatics, i doubt they lack the skill

@NanoRaptor
The strangest Gameboy cart I saw was in maybe Elektor Magasine. It converted the Gameboy into an oscilliscope.

Cromix on Z80 was amazing (the Gameboy uses a kind of Z80).

Stranger than fiction

The Cromix I used ran on a dual 68000 – Z80 system.

Your cart has a 2.5mm jack socket for a TTL serial keyboard?

@raymaccarthy @NanoRaptor This one? 🀣

@TobiX @NanoRaptor
Probably! Though I had (or maybe have in the attic) the English version.

Time flies πŸ˜€

Also if writing your own SW for a Gameboy, I think the big DIL BIOS Flash ICs in a 468 can be recycled. I have a drawer full now from scrapped PCs.
I made an adaptor once to take two ICs so you could move a jumper after DOS boot and use the regular BIN updater to re-write an IC. Allowed recovery of "bricked" boot (which can be caused by bad file, power cut or whatever when updating.

@raymaccarthy I might have swapped the BIOS chip of a running PC once to recover a wrong-flashed BIOS πŸ˜†
@TobiX
I did that the first time to recover a bricked BIOS IC. It worked.
Risky!
Then I made the adaptor on stripboard.
Back then we maybe had 3 or 4 very similar 486 PCs.
Down to one & had to hack two holes in CMOS RAM+ RTC case to add a new battery in a holder.
The epoxy sealed is stupid. I have a PCI RAID controller with an i960 that may have lost its settings by now. But everything was backed up and also transferred to a SATA drive.
Rebuild when it was 2G drives was 1 thing, but 20G 😭
@NanoRaptor Huh? There was Vim for Gameboy?? I only know Vim for Linux tbh
@NanoRaptor damn that's hot. Made me hard

@NanoRaptor Oooh, we’re causing equal opportunity mayhem today

@slothrop @NanoRaptor

Perfectly sighted

Missed the claymore warning until alt text!

@NanoRaptor ... usually accompanied by the cries of the user.

@NanoRaptor

Love the "Front Towards Enemy"

A gender twist on that I printed out from an available STL:

@NanoRaptor saving a modified file is simple. Just press in rapid order: ↓→(b + a) a a a b

@NanoRaptor

The front towards enemy is a nice touch!

@NanoRaptor a friend once said it looked like I was using a spreadsheet on my Gameboy while I was using LSDj to make music. He wasn't wrong.
@NanoRaptor Tom Christiansen (one of the authors of the original "Programming Perl" book) once said that vim was a video game that also got things done
@NanoRaptor @petrillic but could you exit or was your Gameboy stuck forever?

@NanoRaptor
Worst. Chordal. Keyboard. Ever.

The worst part was making ESC Up-A-B-Select and Up-A-B-Start ; not : . You COULD HAVE just chin-rolled into command mode, but nooooooo....

@NanoRaptor maybe it doesn't allow you to turn the beep sound off. Hopefully it doesn't have all of those colour schemes.
@NanoRaptor hey at least exiting out of this one is easy
@NanoRaptor @lisamelton Users were confused when slide the power switch off on their Gameboy that the unit didn’t turn off. Many gamers simply waited for the batteries to die to exit Vim.
@NanoRaptor I tried to exit but ended up getting 30 lives instead.
@NanoRaptor And by not having an escape character on the GameBoy, the game had only one fatal flaw. No one could ever exit the game.
@NanoRaptor @Furball "Front toward enemy." πŸ˜‚
@NanoRaptor love this on my thinkboy
@NanoRaptor Imagining holding a game controller while looking at a vim window is infuriiating, thanks
@NanoRaptor the "Front Toward Enemy" text is just the icing on the cake.
@NanoRaptor
Is leaving the editor document or is it a cheat code?
@NanoRaptor the cheat code for Mario brothers? LOL try exiting Vim...
@NanoRaptor Is it kind of weird that I miss terrifying beeps a little?
@NanoRaptor Dana, this is horrible. Thank you 🀩
