daniel berntsson, one of mullvad's two founders and owners, has donated millions to a local fascist/populist party. (swedish link to flamman, a socialist news site)

the örebro party are mainly known for using unusually aggressive rhetorics and racism.

in the article, berntsson specifically mentions supporting the örebro party's politics of forced repatriation of swedish citizens born abroad.

EDIT: …and should you decide that you're not renewing your subscription, then may i suggest telling them about it? i mean it's arguably a good thing if they're made aware that they're losing customers because of the owners financing this crap. and they can't get away with it since anonymous donations to political parties are prohibited in sweden.

you could even tell them here on fedi. it's mullvadnet(at)mastodon.online

Techprofil ger miljoner till Örebropartiet

It-bolaget Mullvads grundare donerade fem miljoner – till parti som vill se ”storskalig återvandring”

Flamman

guess i could mention that they've also argued against queer rights, calling LGBTQ orgs "a full-on mafia" etc

so if you pay mullvad then apparently that's where the money ends up

@jasmine oh. So basically we're back to literally no good VPNs then

It's either paying fascists or having your data sold to and being tracked by the same fascists 🙃

@hazelnot @jasmine
Is Tuta bad as well? I'm aware of Proton and now Mullvad, but if thete is anything on Tuta, I must have missed it.
@leeloo @jasmine no idea, I didn't know they have a VPN service though

@hazelnot @jasmine
Hmm, looks like they don't.

I was convinced they did, I guess I was mistaken. My bad.

@leeloo @hazelnot @jasmine
There was a "rumor" that tuta is a honeypot, disseminated via a canadian intelligence chief a few years ago, but literally everyone in infosec has paid it no mind.

It's been enough to keep me away, but I'm in the minority there:

Report:
https://torontosun.com/news/national/ex-official-accused-of-leaking-secrets-says-he-didnt-betray-rcmp-absolutely-not

Tuta's response:
https://tuta.com/blog/tutanota-not-a-honeypot

Accused RCMP leaker tells of clandestine operation, moles inside law enforcement

A former RCMP official accused of leaking secrets says he was actually conducting a clandestine intelligence operation.

@leeloo @hazelnot @jasmine what’s the problem with Proton?

@benny @hazelnot @jasmine
The same thing. Lead guy came out in support for fascism.

Are you nee here? That was all over the fediverse a while ago.

@leeloo @hazelnot @jasmine No, I have missed it.

I migrated all my stuff to Proton a few months back. Now, I’m wondering what to use next. Perhaps I should finally self-host my mail server.

@benny please consider Runbox.com, I have had no issues with them and the pricing is fair IMO for what they offer

Posteo.net is also another option.

@jessienab I have moved from Posteo to Proton. The reasons was that my mail adress got more spam/phishing mails and Posteo didn’t considered these as this, even when there where clear indication in the Mail Header.
And I like the unlimited random aliases feature in proton, which allows me to setup for each service an random Mail Adresse.
You can use +aliases in Posteo, but they leaking your real address and you can start a conversation from these aliases.

@benny

Maybe try Anonaddy.io to make aliases? I use it with my email provider (mailbox.org) and I love it. You can reply from your alias (althought i haven't tried it yet) and they give you proper aliases, not the + addon kind.

You get 10 shared domain aliases for free and unlimted standard aliases, it supports gpg encryption (I use it!), and they've partnered with Tuta and other privacy focused services. It can apparently also be selfhosted.

@benny
This is what I did last year after Proton came out as pro-Trump
@leeloo @hazelnot @jasmine
Does Proton really support Trump? A deeper analysis (and surprising findings)

Recently, allegations surfaced on Reddit that Proton (or at least Proton’s CEO) supports Trump. Hillary Keverenge from Tech-Issues Today…

@leeloo @hazelnot @jasmine not in the same sense, they are allegedly a honeypot though

@hazelnot @jasmine AirVPN was decent when I used them. Afaik also zero logs, zero knowledge like mullvad.

But I don't know what the founders are up to...

VPN service that's fast, reliable, & effective

@jasmine goddammit, can we please have at least one vpn company that isn't trash? Just ONE?!
@babe @jasmine I switched to AirVPN a while ago, they seem OK.
AirVPN

AirVPN
@jasmine taps the sign no such thing as a good for-profit company
@navi but there are degrees. this guy is essentially keeping that party alive financially. there's not much they can give him in return. he seems to be doing it out of pure conviction. it's a bit like when IKEA sold fascist literature a few decades ago because the founder, disillusioned after hitler lost the war and all that, turned to fascism instead
@jasmine @navi this seems like a rather naive position to take on giving millions of dollars to a fascist political party in the age of the resurgence of fascism. there are lots of things you can do with millions of dollars, like rebuild your party.

@tael not sure i understand your point, but it does kind of read like a response to something else than what i was trying to say

with that said, a minor correction: it's 5 million SEK, not dollars. that's roughly half a million USD. from the article it sounds like the purpose is to help the party get into the national parliament in the elections in september. they're only represented in the city council of örebro so far. it's also a fairly new party. https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%96rebropartiet

btw please don't remove CWs when replying, thanks

@navi

Örebropartiet – Wikipedia

@jasmine I think @Tael must have been responding to @Navi.

Thanks for spreading this so people can make informed buying decisions.

@navi @jasmine Because there is no such thing as ethical capitalism.
@navi @jasmine Sorry, but this is a terrible take IMO. There are still gradients and we can decide not to fund literal fascists.
@navi @jasmine this is true, but until it is possible to exist in the capitalist system without engaging with some for-profit companies, the next best option is to engage with the least evil companies possible
@jasmine oh no, I thought these were one of the very few decent companies that I didn't feel guilty about paying 😡
@ciara me too. but apparently that money ends up supporting racists fighting against my rights as a queer person. not a product i'm interested in, so to speak
@jasmine I don't even know who I'll switch to, I know it's not going to be Proton either sigh
@ciara i think duckduckgo runs a vpn but i have no idea about their politics, except that afaik they made it possible to opt-out entirely from their AI stuff
@jasmine @ciara Depending on your use case Xeovo might be an option. However I have not done any background checks on them and they might not be the best option for some use cases.
@jasmine @ciara there's cryptostorm but they don't have their own client and it's kinda expensive if you want lots of devices
@jasmine @ciara Only if you never close your browser again. It resets every goddamn time.
@MiaMarkTwo @jasmine @ciara don't know about their politics but you can add noai.duckduckgo.com to your browser as a custom search engine — they've not reset or broken that since introducing it
@jasmine @ciara Peter Sunde went to jail for what he believed in and runs https://njal.la , pretty sure no other VPN service currently beats their track record of protecting online privacy.
Njalla — Worlds most notorious privacy provider for domains, VPS' and VPNs.

Njalla — Considered the worlds most notorious "e;Privacy as a Service"e; provider for domains, VPS' and VPNs.

@rafa @jasmine Dyou know if they keep logs?

@rafa peter sunde being involved is a decently good sign. i haven't kept a super close eye on him but i'd be incredibly surprised if he leaned fascist, given his political history (left party -> green party -> pirate party)

@ciara

@ciara @jasmine maybe @AirVPN?
I havent dugged too deep, but havent found anything dealbreaking (yet).

@ciara @jasmine
@MiaMarkTwo
I'll probably switch to IVPN. No logs, multi hop available, Privacy Guides recommends, Comparitively expensive

@ciara @jasmine AirVPN seems like a good choice. Created by activists, hacktivists, hackers https://airvpn.org/aboutus/

@camcamagy @ciara @jasmine My issue with them is their outdated cryptography. Old fashioned RSA instead of ed25519. They're definitely good if you only need a tunnel & don't really care about the security though.

@jasmine

Yeah, letting my subscription die now. Bought up for a few months already unfortunately. Guess it's time to find another one all over again.

Any suggestions for alternatives?

@ciara

@kavana @jasmine @ciara
I almost don’t want to suggest it in case it turns out they’re awful too, but Windscribe?
I get a discount due to being a Kagi subscriber…
@gareth @kavana @jasmine @ciara ...and Kagi (last I checked) supports Russia by using yandex.
@jasmine @ciara Just as I thought, there's no such thing as good capitalism.
@kouett @jasmine thx i am filled with a low amount of professional competitive determination
@jasmine Oh, Jesus fuck. Can we have *any* good guys?
