Six years since the start of COVID and this type of misinformation by omission is still rampant. The best protection against airborne pathogens is wearing a high quality mask.
The World Cup Is Bringing Millions to the U.S. Should You Worry About Infectious Diseases?

Doctors weigh in about the potential disease risks of a major international event like the World Cup.

Time
@luckytran Agreed. My last round of COVID I caught from a liar on a backpacking trip. I masked in the van to & from the trailhead, kept my tent further away from everyone, but still ended up with it due to all the exertion & air being expelled on the trail by the sick person. (It was pouring rain, so masking while backpacking wasn't really an option.)

@luckytran SMH. 🙄

I've known people who have swallowed this hook line and sinker as the only prophylactic against Covid. It is especially rampant in schools, for some reason.

For a while, many of them were obsessed with hand cleanliness -- as most of us were at the beginning of the pandemic -- before a very few brave scientists said, in mid 2020, "hey, it might be airborne, let's wear masks and purify the air." These are the people I listened to.

Most of the hand-washers I know did not progress to "oh, it is airborne, duh, I'll wear a mask." While I appreciate clean hands, of course, because there are so many other diseases that can be transmitted via touch surfaces, I am agog that this level of disinformation is still the go to -- especially in crowded situations. 🤬

@luckytran I'd say the biggest risk is having to sit through the tedium of sport
@luckytran Lola Germs just posted a really nice long form YouTube video on the history of airborne disease. Educational and entertaining.
@luckytran Wash your hands to protect against this airborne virus, folks… a few seconds of moral obligation and then you’re freeeeee to pork away as normal. If anyone suggests doing more, just plead helplessness and scream at them for daring to guilt trip you. And don’t forget to use opposite extreme steel man arguments with the implication that there is literally nothing in between mosh pitting hedonism and monasteries-for-one. Remember - you do you! That’s how to be a happy, contented, fulfilled, self-actualised consumer culture disposable. It’s all just a jungle-with-benefits, anyhoo.

@luckytran

This makes me think about the millions of liters of hand sanitizer sold to ostensibly combat COVID.

Foolish.

@dusk @luckytran
I mean, it's not foolish to clean your hands if you touch your face holes, but it's not helping anything that's airborne of course
@luckytran Handwashing is the Pontius Pilate version of public health.

@luckytran

Masks would also offer some protection in an aerosolized BW #smallpox attack.

Given the funding disruptions to #biowatch, the dismantling of the CDC's event response, the CDC's suspension of testing for #orthopoxvirus, the decapitation of our homeland security apparatus, the anti-vaxxer controlling the SNS and the Manchurian executive, it's a great idea to #maskup, especially at night games.

It's never too late to get vaccinated either, unless #RFKJr hesitates for four days.

@luckytran

man this is wild

it's like saying wear a condom to protect you from a rainstorm

@marz @luckytran
I always wear a hat when crossing the road to avoid getting hit by a car

#covid

@luckytran
I wonder why Ukraine isn't using anti tank mines against drones and missiles.

Maybe they've figured out something about airborne threats.

@luckytran Those same signs are posted where I work: Prevent disease transmission! Wash your hands! It's not incorrect, but it's just theater.

Meanwhile the employee with a respiratory infection has their mask hanging off their face. People know. They understand. But this elaborate fiction is taking place within the group, and you have to go along with it if you want to be seen as a team player.

I had never seen this effect until Covid and I still don't get it.

@luckytran ... And of course, gonorrhea is actually the most likely contagious risk during major sports events. Political ones, too, for that matter. Herpes is right up there, too.
@luckytran 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
