My local #regionalburn just got canceled. The announcement stated the reason as not enough volunteers for lead positions (I think the fediverse and the burnerverse have some things in common). However, there is still drama, I think: some people were treated pretty badly by upper leadership of the organization in past years, and there has never been any public acknowledgment of that. Now a couple of those people are volunteering for the positions that apparently are unfilled and the reason for the entire event being canceled, and at least one has been told publicly (i.e., in the FB group) that their help is not wanted or needed, because now they've got new leadership.

The response to lingering questions about shitty treatment in the past seems to get a similar response: New leadership who dis?

I suspect the drama will continue, which is too bad because the event was always amazing and wonderful break from the default world.

@guyjantic Oh, that sucks and I'm sorry to hear it.

It says something about the repetitive dynamics of regional burns that my initial response was, "Oh god, do we go to the same regional and I missed an email?"

I've seen similar dynamics to that in this area before, too. (Maybe it's it's common in a lot of small, local volunteer organizations? Although I've seen it less often repeated in the local bridge [card playing] community.)

@jonobie Well, that makes 2 ways bridge players are more rational than the rest of us. I remember research from the 90s showing that bridge players (in contrast to e.g. MDs, psychotherapists, politicians) adjusted their perceptions of their own skills (at bridge) regularly, and avoided the trap of increasing overconfidence with increasing experience, an issue that plagues lots of other experts.
@guyjantic My bridge-playing partner will LOVE this research. 🤣
